Delta State Police Intensify Operations, Arrest Suspected Kidnapper and Recover Deadly Weapons Across the Region

In a series of coordinated, intelligence-led operations, the Delta State Police Command has significantly stepped up its offensive against kidnapping, armed robbery and illegal arms trafficking, resulting in the arrest of suspected criminals and the recovery of multiple high-powered weapons and ammunition across Delta and neighbouring states.

The breakthroughs were disclosed by Commissioner of Police Aina Adesola, who said extended investigations and sustained pressure on criminal networks have yielded notable results in recent weeks. One of the most recent successes took place on December 29, 2025, when detectives from the CP Special Assignment Team (CP-SAT) tracked down and arrested a suspected inter-state kidnapper, identified as Abubakar Mohammed, in Port Harcourt, Rivers State

Following intensive interrogation, Mohammed led officers to a hidden arms cache in Bayelsa State, where operatives unearthed one AK-47 rifle, 76 rounds of live ammunition, and two AK-47 magazines buried in a concealed location near Tobia Village along Airport Road.

Further success came on January 2, 2026, when the suspect guided police to another stash along the Ughelli–Warri axis near Uyamuge Forest, resulting in the seizure of a K-2 rifle, 49 rounds of live rounds, three K-2 magazines, a pump-action gun, and 32 cartridges

In a separate encounter on January 6, 2026, CP-SAT operatives came into contact with suspected kidnappers in Ohoror community along the Ughelli–Patani Road. The suspects opened fire on the police, triggering a gun duel during which one suspect was fatally wounded. After securing the scene, officers recovered another K-2 rifle, two locally made guns and live ammunition.

The Commissioner also reported successes against illegal arms trafficking. In a sting operation on January 3 at Ovieta Street, Ughelli Town, the command arrested three suspects involved in an arms transaction, seizing a pump‐action gun and ₦280,000, believed to be part of the deal.

In addition to the recent arrests and weapons recoveries, the Delta police have recorded broader gains against criminality in 2025. A comprehensive briefing by the command showed that 627 suspects had been apprehended over the year in operations targeting armed robbers, kidnappers, murder suspects, cultists, and persons implicated in rape and defilement, with 144 firearms, including AK-47 and Beretta rifles, and thousands of rounds of ammunition, recovered. Substantial ransom monies and stolen vehicles were also confiscated as part of these enforcement activities.

These results reflect a multi-pronged strategy, involving proactive intelligence gathering, collaboration with community volunteers and security partners, and targeted raids on syndicate hideouts. Police spokesman in the state has underscored that the enhanced operations aim not only to arrest individual suspects but also to dismantle the organisational networks behind kidnappings, armed robbery and illicit arms proliferation

Authorities have urged the public to continue providing timely and credible information that could assist ongoing efforts, stressing that community cooperation remains crucial to breaking the cycle of violence that has long affected parts of the Niger Delta.

These recent successes by the Delta State Police Command demonstrate an intensified effort to protect lives and property, disrupt criminal enterprises, and restore a sense of security to communities long plagued by violent crime and illegal arm proliferation.
