A 46-year-old Nigerian man, identified as Osemwengie Irorere, was **shot and killed inside a bus at the Yorkdale GO Bus Terminal in Toronto, Canada, in what authorities are investigating as a homicide, marking the city’s first killing of the year.

According to the Toronto Police Service, officers were called to the terminal near Yorkdale Road and Allen Road on Sunday, January 4, 2026, at about 7 p.m. following reports of a shooting. Investigators said the alleged shooter and the victim boarded the GO Transit bus at the terminal shortly before the incident. While the bus was still at the platform, the suspect allegedly discharged a firearm, striking Irorere.

Emergency crews arrived on the scene and found the 46-year-old with a gunshot wound. Despite attempts at life-saving measures, Irorere was pronounced dead at the location. Police identified him as a Nigerian national, and confirmed that the attack occurred on board the bus rather than at a separate nearby location.

Law enforcement acted quickly, locating and arresting 40-year-old Tyrel Gibson of Toronto a short distance from the scene. A firearm was recovered from the suspect at the time of his arrest. Gibson has been charged with first-degree murder, a charge that carries significant penalties under Canadian law, and was scheduled to appear before the Toronto Regional Bail Centre in the days following his arrest.

Toronto police have not released details about a possible motive or any relationship between the victim and the suspect. Investigators continue to probe the circumstances surrounding the shooting, and members of the public are being asked to come forward with any information that could assist ongoing inquiries

The fatal shooting has shocked commuters and community members in Toronto’s busy North York district, where the GO Bus Terminal serves as a major transit hub connecting municipal and regional services. Police noted that the incident represents an unexpected and rare act of violence in the transit system, prompting questions from residents and transit users about safety and security on public transportation.

Authorities have said the homicide investigation is active, with detectives from the Homicide and Missing Persons Unit continuing to gather evidence and interview witnesses. No additional persons of interest have been publicly identified, and police have emphasised that they will release further information as the investigation progresses.

Irorere’s death has reverberated beyond local borders, drawing reactions from Nigerian communities both in Canada and abroad. Nigerian-Canadian and diaspora groups have expressed grief and called for enhanced protection for immigrant communities and travellers, while also urging authorities to ensure a thorough and transparent investigation.

As the case moves through the legal system, the accused’s court appearances and the police investigation will be closely followed by both Canadian media and international observers, particularly given the international dimension of the victim’s nationality and the rare nature of such violent incidents on public transit in Canada.
