The Nigerian Army has escalated clearance and internal security operations across parts of Kwara and Niger states, signalling a renewed push to dismantle criminal networks and restore stability in the North Central region. The intensified operations come amid persistent threats posed by banditry, kidnapping, armed robbery, and other violent crimes that have disrupted daily life and economic activities in several communities across the zone.

The Commander of Headquarters 22 Armoured Brigade, Brigadier General Nicholas Rume, disclosed the development on Saturday during the 2025 Nigerian Army Social Activities held at the Sobi Cantonment in Ilorin, the Kwara State capital. Addressing military personnel, government representatives, and invited guests, Rume said the brigade has sustained multiple coordinated operations within its Area of Responsibility, focusing on criminal elements exploiting border communities, forest reserves, and hard-to-reach terrains to launch attacks and evade security forces.

According to the brigade commander, the ongoing security drive reflects the Army’s assessment of evolving threats in the region and its determination to deny criminal groups safe havens. He explained that the operations span both active combat missions and stabilisation efforts aimed at reassuring residents and enabling normal socio-economic activities to resume in affected areas. Rume stressed that the Nigerian Army remains committed to proactive engagement rather than reactive deployment, noting that early pressure on criminal elements is critical to long-term peace.

Among the operations highlighted were Operation Fansan Yamma, Operation Harmony in Kwara State, and Operations Park Strike IV and V. The Park Strike operations covered vast and challenging terrains within the Kainji Lake National Park and adjoining communities in Borgu Local Government Area of Niger State, as well as Kaiama and Baruten Local Government Areas of Kwara State. These areas have, in recent years, been identified by security agencies as strategic hideouts for armed groups due to dense forests and proximity to state borders.

Brigadier General Rume explained that Operation Fansan Yamma remains ongoing and is specifically designed to flush out bandits, dismantle their camps, and restore peace to communities that have suffered repeated attacks. He said troops involved in the operation are conducting intensive patrols, intelligence-led raids, and confidence-building engagements with local populations. According to him, the objective is not only to neutralise threats but also to prevent their re-emergence by maintaining a sustained military presence.

To support these efforts, the Nigerian Army has expanded its operational footprint through the establishment of new Forward Operating Bases and patrol points across strategic locations. Rume disclosed that Forward Operating Bases have been set up in Patigi and Ilemona, while additional patrol bases are operational in Babasango, Gada, and Daban Lema. He said the new installations are designed to enhance rapid response capabilities, improve intelligence gathering, and ensure closer engagement with communities vulnerable to criminal infiltration.

“These bases complement our operations in neighbouring states and significantly enhance our response to security threats,” the brigade commander said, adding that the proximity of troops to local communities allows for faster reaction times and better coordination with other security agencies. He noted that the Army’s presence has already contributed to improved security in several areas, although he acknowledged that sustained efforts are required to consolidate the gains made so far.

Rume attributed the scale of the current operations to the rising and interconnected nature of security threats across the North Central zone. He cited terrorism, kidnapping, banditry, and armed robbery as challenges that require joint action by all arms of the security services. Emphasising inter-agency cooperation, he assured residents that the 22 Armoured Brigade would continue to work closely with the police, intelligence agencies, and other stakeholders to safeguard lives and property.

“I assure you of the readiness of 22 Armoured Brigade to collaborate with all security agencies towards achieving peace and security in our area of responsibility,” he stated, reiterating the Army’s resolve to protect civilians while upholding professionalism and respect for human rights.

The event also drew commendation from the Kwara State Government, which acknowledged the role of the military in curbing insecurity across the state. Governor AbdulRahman AbdulRazaq, who was represented by the Special Adviser on Security Matters, Brigadier General Saliu Tunde Bello (retd), praised the Nigerian Army, particularly the 22 Armoured Brigade, for what he described as its consistent and courageous efforts in confronting security challenges.

According to the governor, the Army’s operations have been critical in safeguarding lives, livelihoods, and public infrastructure, especially in rural communities that have historically borne the brunt of criminal violence. He noted that improved security has a direct impact on agriculture, trade, and investment, sectors that are vital to Kwara State’s economic growth and social stability.

“I applaud the relentless efforts of the 22 Armoured Brigade and the Nigerian Army in combating these challenges,” the governor said. “Your bravery and determination in restoring peace and order are commendable, and it is evident that your hard work is making a tangible difference in our state.” He added that the government recognises the sacrifices made by military personnel and remains committed to supporting them.

Governor AbdulRazaq reaffirmed his administration’s willingness to provide logistical support and strengthen cooperation with the military to enhance the effectiveness of ongoing and future operations. He stressed that security remains a top priority for his government and called on residents to support security agencies by providing timely and credible information.

The intensified operations in Kwara and Niger states reflect a broader national effort to address insecurity across Nigeria’s diverse regions. In the North Central zone, the convergence of forested landscapes, porous borders, and socio-economic pressures has created opportunities for criminal groups to operate. Security analysts note that sustained military presence, combined with intelligence-driven operations and community engagement, is essential to reversing these trends.

As operations continue, residents in affected communities are cautiously hopeful that the expanded military deployments will bring lasting relief. While challenges remain, the Nigerian Army’s renewed focus on clearance operations, base expansion, and inter-agency collaboration signals a determination to confront insecurity head-on and restore confidence among the population. For many communities in Kwara and Niger states, the success of these efforts could mark a turning point in the long struggle for peace and stability in the region.
