Ikorodu, Lagos State — A 72-year-old Nigerian man who spent the majority of his adult life in the United States has been shot dead in his home in Ikorodu, Lagos State, in what local authorities are describing as an armed robbery incident.

The deceased, identified as Alhaji Mutiu Agbosasa, had lived in the United States for approximately 45 years before returning to Nigeria in recent years to enjoy his retirement. Well-known among friends and family as a dedicated provider and expatriate returnee, Mr. Agbosasa was reportedly in his Ikorodu residence on the morning of December 15, 2019, when unknown assailants forced entry and shot him.โŸReports indicate that the attack was carried out by armed robbers, though the identities and motives of the perpetrators remain unconfirmed and under investigation by the Lagos State Police Command.

According to initial accounts circulating on social media and relayed by local news outlets, Mr. Agbosasa had completed his long-held dream of building a retirement home in Ikorodu after decades in Brooklyn, New York, where he raised his family and worked as an accounting professional. His return to Nigeria was seen by relatives and community members as a homecoming after years of service abroad.

Residents of the area expressed shock and sorrow at the news of his killing, describing Mr. Agbosasa as a gentle and generous figure who had lived a law-abiding life both overseas and after his return. In online tributes and posts reflecting on his life, friends and family recalled his years of hard work in the United States and his plans to retire peacefully in the community he once left as a young man.

Local police sources have confirmed that the Lagos State Police Command is investigating the incident, though official statements on arrests or leads have yet to be released. Authorities have appealed to residents in and around Ikorodu to assist with any credible information that could help in identifying those responsible for the brazen attack.

The killing of Mr. Agbosasa has reignited concerns about security in residential areas within Lagos State, particularly for returnees and retirees who have chosen to invest in property and community life after years abroad. Cases of home invasions and violent robberies have periodically drawn attention to gaps in security, despite ongoing efforts by law enforcement agencies to curb such crimes.

While many expatriates and returnees see Nigeria as a place to reconnect with family and heritage, incidents such as this underscore persistent challenges related to crime and public safety. Experts and community leaders have called for improved policing and stronger neighborhood watch initiatives to protect vulnerable citizens and deter opportunistic criminal activity.

Friends who knew Mr. Agbosasa spoke of his determination to live out his later years in his native land, embracing the culture and community ties that had shaped his early life. Sources close to the family revealed that he had relocated from New York less than a year prior to his death, choosing Ikorodu for its serenity and proximity to family.

No official statement has yet been issued by the Lagos State Police Command or the Nigerian federal authorities regarding progress in the investigation. Relatives of the deceased are reported to be in contact with law enforcement, seeking answers and urging decisive action to bring the attackers to justice.

The tragedy has drawn sympathy from both local and international communities, with messages of condolence shared widely on social media platforms. Close associates described Mr. Agbosasa as a man of integrity and resilience who navigated the challenges of life abroad while maintaining deep ties to his homeland.

As the investigation continues, residents of Ikorodu and Lagos at large remain on alert, with many urging authorities to intensify patrols and enhance security measures in residential neighborhoods. Analysts say that while Lagos is one of Nigeria’s most economically vibrant states, the threat of crime continues to affect perceptions of safety for both locals and returnees alike.

For now, the community mourns the loss of Alhaji Mutiu Agbosasa, a retiree who returned to Nigeria with hopes of peace and comfort, only to meet a tragic end. The case serves as a reminder of the ongoing need for collaborative efforts between law enforcement and citizens to safeguard lives and property across Lagos State.
