The United States Embassy in Abuja and the U.S. Consulate General in Lagos have announced they will be closed on Monday, January 19, 2026, in observance of Martin Luther King Jr. Day, a federal holiday in the United States that commemorates the life and legacy of the civil rights leader.

In a statement released over the weekend, embassy officials advised American citizens residing in or visiting Nigeria to plan accordingly, noting that consular services, including visa processing, routine appointments, and emergency services, will not be available on that day. The embassy encouraged U.S. citizens to access online resources for urgent guidance and information during the closure.

Martin Luther King Jr. Day is celebrated annually on the third Monday of January and is dedicated to honoring Dr. King’s pivotal role in advancing civil rights, nonviolent activism, and equality in the United States. The holiday serves as a reminder of the ongoing struggle for justice and human rights globally.

Officials further reassured the public that normal operations at both the Abuja Embassy and the Lagos Consulate will resume on Tuesday, January 20, 2026, and urged visitors to schedule appointments accordingly.

The closure highlights the embassy’s commitment to observing national U.S. holidays while providing advance notice to residents, travelers, and stakeholders relying on its services in Nigeria.
