Adamawa State, Nigeria — Suspected Boko Haram terrorists launched a deadly midnight attack on Kirchinga, a community in Madagali Local Government Area and the hometown of Governor Ahmadu Umaru Fintiri, resulting in the deaths of two Forest Guards and the abduction of a third, local residents and officials reported early Tuesday.
According to eyewitness accounts, heavily armed assailants stormed Kirchinga between 1:00 a.m. and 2:00 a.m., opening fire on operatives of the newly established Forest Guards. Two guards — identified locally as Njidda Maradi and Yuguda Abasaryu — were killed on the spot, while a third was forcibly taken into nearby forests, sources said.
Residents described scenes of panic as gunfire echoed through the village. Many villagers reported raising alarms and placing distress calls to security forces, but the attackers escaped before reinforcements could arrive. Witnesses also alleged that the militants had camped near a burial ground behind the Maradi Primary School ahead of the assault.
The Adamawa State Police Public Relations Officer, SP Suleiman Nguroje, confirmed that an attack occurred in Kirchinga but reported a lower casualty figure, stating that “one person was killed and another injured.” However, multiple local accounts insist that two Forest Guards were killed and one abducted, highlighting a recurring gap between official statements and eyewitness testimony in conflict-affected areas.
The Forest Guards, a community-based auxiliary security outfit introduced in parts of northern Nigeria to support conventional forces in protecting rural and forested areas, have been increasingly targeted by insurgent groups since their deployment. Adamawa State, which borders conflict zones and has suffered repeated Boko Haram and ISWAP incursions over the years, remains a volatile theatre of Nigeria’s longstanding insurgency.
This latest attack underscores the persistent security challenges in the Northeast, where militants continue to exploit difficult terrain and community vulnerabilities to strike at both civilians and security operatives. Local sources expressed deep concern over the safety of residents and the abducted guard, urging intensified military and security responses to prevent further loss of life and safeguard vulnerable border communities.
