Plateau State, Nigeria — Governor Caleb Mutfwang has expressed profound sorrow and condemnation following a deadly night‑time assault on a mining camp in Kuru community, Jos South Local Government Area, which claimed the lives of seven people and left several others injured, officials confirmed. The governor’s reaction was issued in a statement on Thursday, conveyed through his Director of Press and Public Affairs, Gyang Bere.
The attack, which occurred Wednesday night, plunged the Kuru community into mourning after armed assailants stormed a mining site, reportedly opening fire indiscriminately on workers. Seven mining labourers — many of them youths — were killed, with several others sustaining injuries in the incident that has heightened fears over the worsening security situation in parts of the state.
In his statement, Governor Mutfwang described the onslaught as barbaric, senseless and most regrettable, particularly at a time when his administration has stepped up efforts to restore peace and stability across Plateau. He extended heartfelt condolences to the families of the deceased and prayed for swift healing for those injured.
“The governor strongly condemned the recent coordinated attacks in Kuru, Gyel and Buhum communities,” the statement read, reaffirming his government’s firm commitment to safeguarding lives and property in every part of the state. He stressed that such acts of terror would not deter the government’s resolve to decisively confront banditry, terrorism and all forms of criminality.
Governor Mutfwang also commended the resilience and dedication of security agencies, urging them to intensify intelligence‑led operations to ensure the speedy arrest and prosecution of the perpetrators. He directed security forces to collaborate more closely with local communities to proactively identify and neutralise emerging threats, enhancing early‑warning systems and community engagement to prevent similar tragedies.
The governor reaffirmed the administration’s commitment to the safety, well‑being and welfare of Plateau residents, promising that every necessary step will be taken to secure vulnerable areas and support affected families during this period of grief.
His reaction comes amid growing concern in the state over a pattern of violent attacks on mining communities, which local leaders and civil society groups say reflect deeper security challenges. Recent assaults — including those on artisanal miners — have sparked calls for more robust protection and sustained interventions by both state and federal authorities.
As Plateau continues grappling with insecurity in rural sectors, Governor Mutfwang’s statement underscores the urgency of intensified security coordination and community support mechanisms aimed at preventing further loss of life and safeguarding livelihoods.
