Nigerian military forces operating under Joint Task Force Operation Fansan Yamma (OPFY) have scored significant victories against terrorist elements in the North West region, dismantling a makeshift medical facility used to treat wounded fighters, neutralising a terrorist, and recovering arms and ammunition, authorities confirmed in separate statements on Friday.

According to the military’s Media Information Officer for OPFY, Captain David Adewusi, troops acted on credible intelligence indicating that injured terrorists were receiving treatment at a concealed location in Bingi Forest. Upon arrival, soldiers discovered and destroyed the illicit medical facility, which had been serving as a hidden support point for the armed group. The destruction of the facility is seen as a strategic blow to the logistics and support network of criminal elements operating across the volatile region.

In a related operation between 21 and 22 January 2026, troops from the 8 Division Garrison Strike Force, supported by personnel of the Department of State Services (DSS), conducted a fighting patrol in Gundumi Village, Isa Local Government Area of Sokoto State. During the patrol, one suspected terrorist was neutralised, while others fled with gunshot wounds into nearby forests. Security forces recovered six AK-47 rifles and three motorcycles from the encounter — equipment believed to have belonged to the fleeing gunmen.

The dual operations reflect the military’s broader efforts to suppress the capacity of terrorist networks to sustain prolonged campaigns of violence, kidnapping and banditry in northwest Nigeria. Destroying the makeshift medical facility and recovering weapons are viewed by commanders as dismantling critical components of the criminal groups’ survival infrastructure.

Beyond kinetic actions, military officials emphasised the humanitarian dimension of their engagements. By degrading the operational bases of terrorists and stabilising affected areas, security forces aim to create safer conditions for civilians, internally displaced persons (IDPs) and refugees to receive humanitarian assistance and, where feasible, return to their homes. This approach aligns with ongoing national and regional strategies to combine security enforcement with civilian protection and humanitarian coordination.

The coordinated offensive demonstrates a sustained intelligence-led campaign against entrenched terror groups in the North West, involving joint operations between conventional army units and Nigeria’s domestic intelligence service. Commanders described the operations as part of a continuous effort to restore peace and security, deepen civil-military cooperation and reduce the influence of criminal networks that have long plagued rural communities.
