Bauchi State, Nigeria — The Nigeria Security and Civil Defence Corps (NSCDC), Bauchi State Command, has intercepted a truck loaded with vandalised railway tracks and arrested five suspects in a major breakthrough against infrastructure theft and vandalism, authorities confirmed on Friday.

According to a statement issued by the NSCDC’s spokesperson, Saminu Yusuf, operatives acting on credible intelligence intercepted the truck during a routine patrol on January 12, 2026, along the Miri–Jos Road near Gital town in Tafawa Balewa Local Government Area

The vehicle, identified as a long-vehicle truck with registration number MDB 360 XA, was allegedly en route to the eastern part of the country when officers stopped it. The truck was found to be carrying 80 pieces of vandalised railway tracks, which had been concealed under bags of chicken feed and slippers in what security officials described as a deliberate attempt to evade detection.

The five suspects arrested in connection with the stolen materials were identified as part of the group transporting the railway infrastructure. Exhibits recovered during the operation included the vandalised railway tracks, the truck used in the operation, and several bags used to disguise the stolen items. In addition, a Lexus LX 350 vehicle with registration number BWR 60 DN was also seized.

NSCDC commanders said that efforts are ongoing to arrest the truck’s owner and the alleged mastermind behind the operation, as well as the driver, who were reported to be at large at the time of the announcement.

The interception highlights growing concerns about vandalism and theft of critical national infrastructure in Nigeria, particularly railway assets, which are vital to the country’s transportation network and economic development. NSCDC officials reiterated their commitment to protecting public infrastructure and prosecuting those involved in vandalism and related crimes.

Commandant Oloyede Nelson Oyerinde of the NSCDC Bauchi State Command praised the operatives for their vigilance and urged community members to continue providing information that could assist in combating vandalism and other criminal activities affecting public infrastructure.
