Lagos — A driver was hospitalised and significant traffic disruption ensued on Sunday morning after a two-vehicle collision took place on the Eko Bridge, one of Lagos State’s busiest transport arteries. The accident occurred at around 6:00 a.m. local time on the inbound lane toward the NEPA area and involved a truck and a private car, according to the Lagos State Traffic Management Authority (LASTMA). Authorities confirmed that the collision resulted in extensive damage to at least one vehicle and prompted urgent emergency response efforts.

The Lagos State Traffic Management Authority, which disclosed details of the crash via its official social media channel, said that the white car flipped over on impact. The driver of that car was injured and quickly transported to a nearby hospital for immediate medical treatment. At the time of reporting, the victim’s condition had not been publicly updated.

Officials from LASTMA and officers from the Ebute Ero Divisional Police Station were among the first on the scene, working to stabilise the situation. With the collision blocking part of the bridge, traffic flow was reduced to a single lane, leading to severe congestion extending toward Offin Canal, as motorists were forced to slow down or seek alternative routes.

The affected stretch of the Eko Bridge handles thousands of vehicles each day, connecting the mainland with the central business districts and Lagos Island. Incidents like Sunday’s crash often have cascading effects on travel throughout the metropolis, particularly during peak hours, as commuters contend with delays and gridlock.

Traffic management teams deployed tow trucks to clear the damaged vehicles, and LASTMA said that the scene was gradually being cleared by mid-morning. Authorities expect normal vehicular movement to resume once the wreckage is fully removed and the roadway inspected for safety.

The early-morning collision has become a worrying reminder of the persistent challenges facing road users in Lagos, where heavy traffic and high commuter volumes amplify the impact of even minor accidents. Road safety advocates have repeatedly called for stricter enforcement of traffic regulations, particularly on vital bridges where limited space can turn incidents into major bottlenecks.

LASTMA officials have not yet released a detailed statement on the possible causes of the crash, including whether factors such as speed, visibility or mechanical failure played a role. Investigations are understood to be ongoing in coordination with Lagos State Police authorities.

Lagos residents have expressed frustration on social media and in commuter groups about the frequency of crashes on key bridges like Eko, Third Mainland and Carter, especially during early morning and peak commuting times. Many have urged greater investment in road safety education and enforcement, noting that traffic discipline remains a significant concern across the state’s road network.

Traffic management teams continue to monitor conditions on the Eko Bridge following the accident. Motorists are being advised to allow extra travel time during the ongoing recovery and clean-up operations and to follow all directions from traffic officials to avoid further delays or secondary incidents.
