Katsina, Nigeria — Armed bandits on Sunday afternoon carried out a bold daylight robbery along the Turare–Kitibawa route in Maƙera Ward, Dutsin-Ma Local Government Area of Katsina State, stealing two motorcycles from residents in an attack that has stoked fear and deepened insecurity in the area.

According to multiple eyewitnesses in the community, the gunmen struck without warning, cruising into the rural stretch on motorcycles and confronting travellers on the road. Residents described how the bandits forcibly took the machines before escaping without resistance, disappearing into nearby bushland amid cries of alarm and panic.

The incident comes just a day after related criminal acts in the same area, where bandits reportedly seized mobile phones from people gathered at phone-charging points and took fuel from a vendor in Kitibawa, underscoring an apparent surge in opportunistic attacks that exploit the region’s limited security presence.

Residents told news outlets that the assailants appeared “brazen and confident,” carrying out the theft in broad daylight without any immediate response from security forces. Their actions have triggered unease among farming communities and commuters alike, many of whom now fear travelling the route, even during daylight hours.

The Turare–Kitibawa axis lies within a region of Katsina State that has seen frequent bandit activity, including raids on villages, kidnappings, and livestock rustling. Local lawmakers have previously warned that security challenges in Dutsin-Ma and neighbouring districts are intensifying, prompting calls for increased government intervention to bolster protection for vulnerable rural populations. Community representatives have urged expanded patrols by security personnel, improved intelligence gathering and closer cooperation with local vigilante groups to deter further attacks.

The Katsina State Police Command has not yet issued a formal statement regarding Sunday’s robbery, but incidents of this nature are consistent with growing concerns across the northwest of Nigeria, where armed criminal networks continue to exploit gaps in rural security infrastructure, particularly along isolated roadways.

Residents and local leaders say the cumulative toll of banditry — from thefts and extortion to more violent raids — is undermining economic activity and community confidence, and they are calling on federal and state authorities to act decisively before the situation deteriorates further.
