Troops of the Nigerian Army’s 6 Brigade, operating under Sector 3 of Operation Whirl Stroke (OPWS), have successfully rescued a kidnapped man during sustained search-and-rescue operations within their area of responsibility.
The rescue was carried out on January 27, 2026, when troops deployed at Dogon Gawa in Taraba State sighted a man who had been abandoned in the bush by his captors. The victim was later identified as Mr. Ghali.
Military sources said the troops were conducting ongoing, aggressive patrols aimed at tracking criminal elements when they discovered the victim. He was immediately secured and evacuated from the area.
Subsequent investigations revealed that Mr. Ghali and another individual, Mr. Simon Oluchukwu, were abducted on January 11, 2026, at Gbise Village, Mbayonga, in Benue State. During the abduction, the kidnappers reportedly shot and killed their driver, escalating the severity of the crime.
Following his rescue, Mr. Ghali was debriefed by military intelligence officers and provided with necessary medical attention. He was later reunited with his family, bringing relief after more than two weeks in captivity.
Commenting on the operation, the Commander, 6 Brigade Nigerian Army and Sector 3 OPWS, Brigadier General Kingsley Chidiebere Uwa, commended the troops for their resilience, courage, and professionalism. He described the successful rescue as a reflection of the effectiveness of sustained, intelligence-driven operations.
Brigadier General Uwa assured that military operations across the sector would be further intensified to rescue the remaining victim and apprehend those responsible for the abduction and killing. He stressed that the brigade would not relent until criminal elements operating in the area are neutralised.
The brigade commander also appealed to residents to continue supporting security forces with timely and credible information, noting that community cooperation remains critical to the success of counter-kidnapping and anti-criminality efforts.
The rescue adds to a series of recent operations by troops of Operation Whirl Stroke aimed at curbing kidnapping, armed robbery, and other violent crimes across parts of Benue, Taraba, and neighbouring states. Security analysts say such operations are crucial to restoring confidence among residents and improving safety along vulnerable rural routes.
Military authorities reiterated their commitment to the protection of lives and property, emphasising that troops of 6 Brigade remain determined to dismantle criminal networks and restore lasting peace within the region.
