Abuja — The Nigeria Data Protection Commission (NDPC), in collaboration with the President Bola Ahmed Tinubu (PBAT) Media Centre, held a capacity-building training session on Data Protection and Privacy for digital media practitioners on Tuesday, 28 January 2026. The session aimed to strengthen the ability of media professionals to operate within Nigeria’s evolving data protection framework while upholding ethical and responsible reporting standards.

The training, which ran from 11:00 a.m. to 3:50 p.m., provided participants with guidance on compliance with NDPC regulations and practical steps for aligning digital operations with legal and regulatory requirements. Experts delivered in-depth briefings on the Nigeria Data Protection Act (NDPA), focusing on safeguarding personal data and respecting the privacy rights of individuals in the course of digital reporting. Participants were also trained on responsible journalism in the digital space, with emphasis on balancing speed, reach, and public interest with ethical data handling.

Representing the NDPC, Dr Tolu Pius-Fadipe, Head of Research and Development, conveyed appreciation to the PBAT Media Centre for its leadership in promoting data security and responsible digital engagement. The NDPC also acknowledged Dada Olusegun, Convener of the PBAT Media Centre; Tobi Matthew, Director-General; and the management team for their commitment to nation-building initiatives through media capacity development.

The training coincided with the official kickoff of Privacy Week 2026, which will run for a week, aiming to raise nationwide awareness of data protection and position it as a central concern within Nigeria’s digital ecosystem. The NDPC stated that the week-long activities would highlight citizens’ rights to privacy while promoting responsible handling of personal data by organisations and media outlets.

Speaking on the importance of the training, Tobi Matthew, Director-General of the PBAT Media Centre, described the event as “all important,” emphasising that it would enhance professionalism and credibility in the centre’s output. He noted that citizen trust in government communication increases when individuals are confident their data and privacy are respected, stating, “Trust once earned amplifies the impact of policies and campaigns.”

NDPC representatives highlighted the engagement as the start of a sustained collaboration with the media. Abiodun Adegoke, Digital Communications Lead at the commission, reiterated that “data protection remains everybody’s business,” stressing that safeguarding personal information requires the collective responsibility of institutions, media practitioners, and citizens alike.

The Convener of PBAT Media Centre and Special Assistant to President Tinubu on Social Media, Dada Olusegun, encouraged participants to “take full advantage” of the training, stressing that the future of governance communication depends not only on visibility but also on integrity, accountability, and respect for citizens’ rights.

This capacity-building session is part of the NDPC’s broader National Privacy Week 2026 initiative, which aims to enhance awareness about the significance of data protection and privacy in Nigeria’s increasingly digital economy. Organisers hope the training will equip media professionals with the skills necessary to responsibly manage personal data while ensuring accurate and ethical reporting in digital spaces.
