The Nigerian Army has launched a major offensive code-named Operation IGBO DANU (Operation Forest Flush) in Kwara State, recording tactical successes against terrorist and bandit networks during sustained operations between January 23 and January 29, 2026. The offensive was undertaken by troops of the 22 Armoured Brigade, 2 Division Nigerian Army, with strong operational support from the Office of the National Security Adviser (ONSA).
In a statement released by the Nigerian Army, forces conducted aggressive fighting patrols into known bandit and terrorist enclaves across the Joint Operations Area, neutralising several armed criminals while forcing others to flee into forested terrain with suspected gunshot wounds. Military efforts led to the destruction of multiple hideouts and logistic bases, significantly disrupting the operational infrastructure of the targeted groups.
A key phase of the campaign involved the clearance of Garin Dandi, a major stronghold used by armed elements in Ifelodun Local Government Area. Soldiers dismantled logistics networks and supply routes that previously enabled the sustainment and mobility of the criminal elements. Troops also overran remote camps that were previously inaccessible to security forces, destroying abandoned camps and logistical enablers, further degrading the adversaries’ capacity to regroup or launch attacks.
The operation reportedly resulted in the arrest of several suspected bandits at blocking positions established along key escape routes. In addition, troops rescued a number of kidnapped victims from various camps across affected areas, underscoring the dual offensive and protective objectives of the campaign.
Military commanders acknowledged the challenges posed by the dense forest terrain, which has historically provided concealment for criminal groups. Despite these obstacles, troops sustained pressure throughout the operation, denying the armed elements freedom of movement and forcing them into surrender or retreat.
Officials also noted that some criminal elements had benefited from intelligence support by local collaborators, highlighting the complex interaction between armed groups and community networks in insecure corridors. In response, the Nigerian Army reiterated the critical importance of credible public cooperation to enhance situational awareness and operational effectiveness.
The campaign reflects broader strategic efforts by security agencies to stabilise vulnerable regions of the North-Central corridor, alongside complementary national directives such as expanded aerial surveillance over forested zones in Kwara and neighbouring states to pre-empt kidnappings and violent raids.
Military leadership, represented by the General Officer Commanding 2 Division and the Brigade Commander, has reaffirmed its commitment to continuing Operation IGBO DANU until all terrorist and bandit networks in the state are decisively dismantled and lasting security restored.
