Abuja, Nigeria — The Federal Medical Centre (FMC) in Abuja has clarified its role in the death of rising singer Ifunanya Nwagene, popularly known by her stage name Nanyah, who passed away on Saturday following a snake bite. The hospital stated that its medical team acted swiftly to save her life, but despite intensive treatment, she could not be revived.
Nwagene, a soprano with the Amemuso Choir, was confirmed dead on Sunday through a statement issued by the choir’s Music Director, Sam Ezugwu. The statement described her passing as a significant loss to Abuja’s music community, highlighting her as a talented singer on the verge of greater recognition. Details regarding her burial were not yet disclosed.
In a separate press release on Sunday evening, FMC management extended condolences to Nwagene’s family, acknowledging the difficulty of losing a loved one. The hospital detailed the medical response provided, including resuscitation efforts, intravenous fluids, intranasal oxygen, and the administration of polyvalent snake antivenom.
The statement explained that Nwagene experienced severe neurotoxic complications from the snake bite. Despite quick evaluation and efforts to stabilize her condition for transfer to the Intensive Care Unit, her condition deteriorated suddenly. Medical personnel performed cardiopulmonary resuscitation and other life-saving measures, but she could not be revived.
FMC management also addressed social media claims alleging a lack of anti-snake venom and inadequate medical response, describing them as unfounded and not reflective of the actual events. “The claims of non-availability of anti-snake venom and inadequate response are unfounded and do not reflect the reality of the situation. We are committed to transparency and integrity in our practices and will continue to pursue excellence in patient care,” the statement read.
The hospital reiterated its dedication to quality patient care and urged the public to rely on verified information rather than speculation on social media. FMC confirmed that it remains open to further inquiries or clarifications regarding the incident.
