Aba, Abia State — Nigerian soldiers have averted what could have been a devastating blast after a suspected explosive device was unearthed at the United Evangelical Church, Ehere/Umuola, Ogbor Hill, Aba, during renovation work, security sources and eyewitnesses reported.

Church members discovered a large metal object buried in the ground while digging for a new fence around the church parsonage. One of the workers reportedly carried the object toward a nearby borehole before the presiding priest became suspicious and warned those present to keep their distance. Recognising the potential danger, the priest swiftly alerted a nearby military unit, prompting soldiers to respond and evacuate the device from the premises.

The area where the object was found is adjacent to a road being expanded by the Abia State Government, and is frequently crowded with worshippers, traders and passersby. Local residents and sympathisers at the scene expressed gratitude that the suspected device did not explode, noting that the intervention likely saved more than 100 lives and prevented destruction of surrounding buildings.

Rev. Thompson Ikpeoha, Secretary of the Aba Area Conference of the United Evangelical Church, confirmed that the incident occurred, although he said he was still awaiting a full briefing from the priest in charge of the Ehere/Umuola congregation. Military sources also confirmed the incident, saying the Army headquarters have taken over the investigation into the nature and origin of the item.

The timely action by the military in securing and removing the suspected bomb underscores ongoing efforts by security forces to protect civilians and critical infrastructure from explosive hazards. Authorities have encouraged residents to report suspicious objects immediately and remain vigilant as investigations continue.
