Lagos/Ibadan — A tragic road accident on Monday, February 2, 2026, has claimed six lives and left 23 others injured on the Lagos-Ibadan Expressway, according to officials from the Federal Road Safety Corps (FRSC).
The incident occurred around Foursquare Camp, a busy stretch of the expressway linking southwestern Nigeria, when a DAF CF 380 truck with registration SNA 287 XA, painted white and blue, reportedly lost control at approximately 11:27 a.m. and collided violently, leaving multiple casualties.
Authorities said the truck was carrying a mixed load of passengers and livestock, including approximately 35 cows, a combination described as unsafe and contributing to the high death toll. In addition to the six human fatalities, 29 cattle reportedly died in the crash. The truck is believed to have originated from northern Nigeria en route to Lagos.
Rescue teams from the FRSC arrived within minutes of the crash. Injured passengers were evacuated to Oreoluwa Hospital, GOFAMINT Camp, Ogunmakin, and Victory Hospital, Ogere, while the bodies of the deceased were transferred to nearby medical facilities for post-mortem procedures. Security personnel and emergency responders worked to secure the scene and facilitate the investigation.
In response to the crash, the FRSC reiterated warnings against the practice of mixed loading, where passengers are transported alongside goods or livestock in heavy trucks. The agency emphasized that such practices increase the risk of fatalities during collisions, as separating human occupants from cargo becomes difficult in emergencies.
Safety officials urged drivers, particularly commercial vehicle operators, to observe traffic regulations, maintain safe speeds, avoid fatigue, and ensure vehicles are properly maintained.
The Lagos-Ibadan Expressway has witnessed a series of serious accidents in recent months, including fatal collisions near Otedola Bridge and other critical points, highlighting ongoing concerns over speeding, poor vehicle maintenance, and lax enforcement of road safety measures. Authorities have warned that continued vigilance and compliance with safety regulations are critical to preventing further tragedies on this busy highway.
