Abuja, Nigeria — The Minister of the Federal Capital Territory (FCT), Nyesom Wike, has pledged to safeguard the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) from what he described as “vampires” and warned against efforts to hijack the party’s structure, as he pledged close oversight of political developments in the Oyo State chapter of the party. The declaration was made on Monday at the 105th meeting of the PDP National Executive Committee (NEC) in Abuja.

Wike said his commitment extends beyond a single state, insisting his focus is on the overall survival, stability and success of the PDP across Nigeria. He emphasised that his actions are driven by a desire to see the party thrive and resist internal sabotage, especially in areas where leadership disputes and organisational challenges have emerged.

“Let me declare my interest clearly: I am interested in the survival and success of this party. I am also interested in all the happenings in Oyo State PDP. That is all I am interested in,” Wike told party leaders. He dismissed claims that party members were being intimidated, saying recent legal battles have been resolved in favour of the recognised leadership, and urged members to stay focused on rebuilding core structures ahead of future elections.

Wike warned against what he termed attempts by “vampires” to take control of PDP structures across the 36 states and the FCT, stressing that such moves must be resisted to restore party cohesion and credibility. His remarks come amid ongoing internal disputes within the party, including legal challenges and factional disagreements over leadership and organisational direction.

He urged members to reject what he described as a culture of entitlement and to return to grassroots mobilisation, focusing on ward-level and polling unit engagement rather than reliance on high-profile figures or the presence of incumbent governors. “Go to the wards. Go to the polling units. Go to the grassroots,” he told NEC members.

Wike also stressed that political strength should not be measured by the number of sitting governors a party commands, recalling his own political ascendancy and asserting that the PDP remains a powerful political force capable of recovery and renewed relevance if its members are united.

The NEC meeting also set dates for the party’s upcoming national convention in Abuja on March 28 and 29, 2026, where new leadership and statutory organs will be elected. The move follows a Federal High Court ruling in Ibadan that nullified a controversial November 2025 convention and reaffirmed the authority of a Caretaker Committee recognised by the court.

As the party navigates these internal dynamics, Wike’s call for vigilance and unity underscores ongoing efforts by senior leaders to stabilise internal affairs and position the PDP for future electoral contests.
