Birnin Gwari, Kaduna State — A prominent labour activist, Comrade Magaji Auwal Abdulhameed, has been killed in a suspected bandit attack along the Birnin Gwari axis of the Birnin Gwari Local Government Area in Kaduna State, security observers reported on Tuesday. The incident occurred while Abdulhameed was returning home, according to posts from security analysts circulating on social media.

Details emerging from the reports indicate that the attack was carried out by armed men believed to be bandits operating in the region. Abdulhameed, who was described as young and politically active in labour circles, was fatally shot during the encounter on the often-troubled corridor linking Birnin Gwari to other parts of the state.

The security commentator who first highlighted the incident on social media emphasised that the killing reflects a “disturbing pattern of insecurity on the Birnin Gwari route”, where travellers, commuters and motorists have repeatedly been targeted in recent months and years despite concerns over safety from residents and analysts.

As of this report, there has been no official confirmation from the Kaduna State Police Command or other security agencies about the circumstances surrounding the attack or the arrest of suspects. Efforts to obtain a statement from law enforcement remained unsuccessful at the time of filing.

The killing of Abdulhameed adds to a long list of banditry-related violence in Birnin Gwari and neighbouring corridors, where armed groups have attacked villages, abducted residents, and assaulted travellers on highways used by civilians and commercial vehicles. Previous incidents in the local government area have included ambushes, kidnappings and deadly attacks on clergy and community leaders.

Local residents and security watchers have repeatedly called for enhanced security measures along the Birnin Gwari–Kaduna and Birnin Gwari–Abuja routes, which are seen as critical arterial roads but have become notorious for bandit activity. The persistent insecurity has raised alarm among communities and road users who continue to fear for their safety while commuting through the region.
