Lagos, Nigeria — A 17-year-old girl identified as Ihechidere Favour Uka has been allegedly killed by her 30-year-old employer, Ibekwe Ezinne Mary, during an argument at a cosmetics shop in Lagos State, local police and community sources report. The tragic incident occurred at about 6:30 p.m. on Tuesday, January 27, 2026, and has sparked widespread outrage and grief.
According to family accounts and preliminary police information, Ihechidere worked as a salesgirl at the shop where the suspect was proprietor. The confrontation began after Ihechidere reportedly returned later than expected when sent to fetch an item. What started as a disagreement reportedly escalated into a physical altercation between the two.
Family sources and community posts allege that during the argument the employer slapped the teenager twice, and that Ihechidere responded by slapping back once. The situation then took a fatal turn when the suspect allegedly drew a kitchen knife and stabbed the teenager in the chest. Ihechidere was said to have bled heavily at the scene and later succumbed to her injuries.
The Lagos State Police Command has arrested Ibekwe Ezinne Mary, who is reported to have confessed to the stabbing during police questioning, although formal charges are yet to be publicly disclosed. Investigators are continuing to establish the precise circumstances of the incident, including motive and whether additional legal counts beyond homicide will be filed.
The killing has triggered anger and concern among residents, with many condemning the use of lethal force in what began as a workplace dispute. The case has also reopened broader conversations about the safety and treatment of underage workers, particularly those employed in informal or small business settings.
Lagos police said they would provide further updates as the investigation progresses, and assured the public that due legal processes will be followed. The community awaits additional statements from the command on any court proceedings or formal charges.
