Abuja, Nigeria — Former chairman of the now-defunct Pension Reform Task Team (PRTT), Dr. Abdulrasheed Maina, was hospitalised on Tuesday after collapsing while attempting to access his office premises in the Federal Capital Territory. The development was confirmed by his media assistant, Emmanuel Umahi Ekwe, in a statement issued on Wednesday, detailing the circumstances of the incident and Maina’s current condition.

According to Ekwe, the collapse occurred as Maina was climbing a staircase leading to his office in the evening. He reportedly lost his balance due to complications from an untreated knee injury, fell, and struck his head on the stairs before passing out. Medical personnel who were present at the scene administered first aid and subsequently rushed him to a private hospital in Abuja for urgent care.

Multiple news outlets report that Maina remains under close medical observation at the hospital, where doctors are monitoring his condition following the head impact sustained in the fall. A preliminary assessment by attending physicians indicated that, if his condition does not stabilise quickly, arrangements for a possible air ambulance evacuation could be considered due to the seriousness of the injury.

Maina’s media aide described the knee issue as having contributed to his loss of balance, underscoring that the injury had been an ongoing concern prior to the incident. The family has appealed to well-wishers and the public to respect their privacy and to keep Maina in their thoughts during this critical period, as doctors continue to oversee his treatment.

Public interest in Maina’s health and status remains high given his controversial history as the head of the Pension Reform Task Team, a body established years ago to sanitize Nigeria’s pension system but later embroiled in allegations of corruption and large-scale misappropriation of funds. In January 2026, reports confirmed that Maina had been released from prison after serving an eight-year sentence related to money laundering and pension fund diversion following convictions in 2021 and affirmation of those sentences on appeal.

Legal commentators note that the ongoing emergency comes as Maina is out of custody and living in Abuja, where he has faced continued public scrutiny. His collapse while accessing office premises has sparked discussion both about his medical condition and the broader context of his legal and post-conviction life in Nigeria’s capital.

Authorities and family representatives have not provided additional medical updates beyond the initial account, and official police or hospital statements remain pending as of early Thursday. The situation continues to develop, and further information may emerge as Maina’s condition evolves and medical assessments are updated.
