LEICESTER, United Kingdom — A 20-year-old second-year university student, Khaleed Oladipo, has died after being stabbed near De Montfort University’s Leicester campus, prompting a murder investigation and the arrest of a teenager, police confirmed. Authorities say the incident took place on Tuesday afternoon in Oxford Street, Leicester city centre, leaving the university and wider community shocked and mourning the loss of the young student.
Leicestershire Police were called just after 5 p.m. on Tuesday, 3 February 2026, following reports that a man had collapsed in the street near the junction with Bonners Lane, close to the university campus. Responding officers and emergency services, including four ambulances and an air ambulance, attended the scene. The victim was identified as Khaleed Oladipo, who had been stabbed during an altercation with another man before officers arrived. Leicestershire Police said Oladipo was taken to Leicester Royal Infirmary, where he later died from a stab wound to the chest, according to the post-mortem examination.
Oladipo, originally from London and studying cybersecurity at De Montfort University, was living in Leicester at the time. In a tribute issued by his family, he was described as an “extremely loved son, brother, uncle, boyfriend and friend” with a deep passion for football. The family said they understand he was possibly on his way home to watch an Arsenal match when he was attacked, and expressed profound grief at his loss. They thanked members of the public who tried to help him, as well as police and medical staff for their efforts.
An 18-year-old man has been arrested on suspicion of murder and remains in police custody as inquiries continue. Authorities are conducting extensive investigations into the circumstances surrounding the fatal stabbing, reviewing CCTV footage from the area and appealing to witnesses and the public to assist with any information that could support the inquiry. Police have sought any dashcam or mobile phone footage from motorists or bystanders in the vicinity.
De Montfort University officials described the attack as “a devastating tragedy” deeply felt across the campus community. The university’s vice-chancellor, Professor Katie Normington, said institutional support was being provided to students and staff affected by the incident, and emphasised the profound loss experienced by classmates and friends. The stabbing has also led to temporary road closures around the city centre and disruption as police secured the scene and carried out investigative work.
The incident has drawn attention to concerns about knife crime in the area, particularly around educational institutions, with local leaders and community members condemning the violence and demanding justice. As the investigation progresses, police continue to appeal to anyone with relevant information to come forward to assist with the ongoing murder inquiry.
