The Sultan of Sokoto, Alhaji Muhammadu Sa’ad Abubakar III, has issued a stern warning about the risks posed by the continued neglect of young people in Nigeria, saying it could exacerbate crime, drug abuse and insecurity across the nation. The traditional and religious leader expressed these concerns through his representative during the launch of a youth‑focused reality initiative in Sokoto, emphasising that the challenges facing young Nigerians require urgent and sustained attention from policymakers, community leaders and society at large.
Addressing stakeholders and participants at the event, the Sultan’s envoy highlighted that youth marginalisation can create fertile ground for antisocial behaviours, pushing young people towards illicit activities, substance misuse and involvement in criminal networks if their aspirations and needs are consistently overlooked. The warning reflects growing anxieties among civic and religious leaders about the intersection between demographic trends, unemployment, educational gaps and the nation’s broader security landscape.
The Sultan’s message aligns with broader debates within Nigeria about the link between youth disenfranchisement and insecurity. Analysts and community figures have noted that a failure to provide young people with opportunities for productive engagement and meaningful livelihoods can contribute to frustration, recruitment into violent groups, and participation in illegal activities that undermine public safety. In recent years, civil society voices have emphasised that investing in education, skills development and employment is essential to reducing crime and building resilient communities.
By underscoring the importance of proactive youth engagement, the Sultan is calling for a holistic approach that integrates social support, economic empowerment and preventative measures aimed at stemming the tide of insecurity among Nigeria’s burgeoning youth population.
