The Movement for the Emancipation of Kogi State (MEKSTA) has publicly demanded the resignation of Governor Ahmed Usman Ododo, accusing him of complicity in alleged corruption linked to the administration of his predecessor, former Governor Yahaya Bello. The statement was issued on Saturday by the pressure group representing various constituencies across the state.
MEKSTA’s letter characterises Ododo as a “mere puppet” in the political machinations of the former governor and questions his integrity and commitment to transparent governance, particularly citing his previous role as Auditor-General for Local Governments under Yahaya Bello. The group argues that this background raises serious doubts about Ododo’s accountability and his relationship to financial mismanagement that allegedly occurred during Bello’s tenure.
The pressure group also claims that Ododo’s continued stay in office undermines justice and accountability, asserting that his administration has failed to adequately address the controversies and alleged financial improprieties that have followed Bello into judicial proceedings. MEKSTA criticised what it described as a pattern of justice being compromised in the state and a culture of corruption and sycophancy among public officials.
Among the allegations cited by the group is the appointment of Ali Bello — a relative of the former governor and Ododo’s Chief of Staff — as a problematic move that they say reflects an effort to shield individuals connected to past controversies from accountability. MEKSTA further faulted the state’s developmental record under Ododo, questioning fiscal priorities and highlighting perceived failures in basic services despite substantial allocations from federal revenue.
In urging Ododo to resign, MEKSTA stated that stepping aside would be a honourable path if the governor truly stood for accountability and the welfare of the people of Kogi State. The group’s statement was signed by representatives from several federal constituencies across the state, underlining the breadth of voices behind the demand.
While MEKSTA’s position reflects persistent political and governance concerns within segments of Kogi’s civil society, Governor Ododo has not publicly responded to the call for resignation as of the latest available reports.
