KANO, Nigeria — The Federal Road Safety Corps (FRSC) has confirmed that seven people were killed and 70 others injured in a lone accident involving a trailer along Hadejia Road, Kwanar Danja area of Kano State on Sunday morning.

The Sector Commander of the FRSC in Kano, Idris Muhammed‑Lawal, disclosed the details in a statement released through the Corps’ Public Relations Officer, Abdullahi Labaran, confirming the casualties and circumstances of the crash. The incident occurred at about 8:35 a.m., and emergency teams responded within minutes after receiving a distress call.

According to the FRSC, the vehicle involved was a DAF trailer with registration number KTG 467 YG, which was reportedly carrying both passengers and goods when the driver lost control. A total of 105 people were on board at the time of the crash, the command said.

Preliminary investigations by the FRSC attributed the tragedy to overspeeding and loss of control, compounded by the dangerous and illegal practice of mixing passengers with goods in the same vehicle. The road condition was described as good, and no hazardous items were recovered at the scene.

Of those involved, seven people lost their lives, while 70 others — including 55 males and 15 females — sustained varying degrees of injuries. The remaining 28 passengers escaped unhurt

In the wake of the crash, the injured were evacuated promptly to four hospitals in and around Kano for medical treatment, with victims distributed to Sir Sunusi Specialist Hospital, Gezawa General Hospital, Murtala Mohammed Specialist Hospital, and Abdullahi Wase Specialist Hospital in Nasarawa, according to the FRSC account.

The FRSC expressed condolences to the families of the deceased and wished the injured a speedy recovery, while issuing a stern warning to motorists — especially drivers of commercial vehicles — to avoid reckless driving, excessive speed, and the practice of transporting passengers alongside goods, which remains a persistent road safety challenge in Nigeria.

Authorities emphasised the importance of strict adherence to traffic safety regulations as part of efforts to prevent future tragedies on the nation’s highways.
