IBADAN, Nigeria — The Oyo State Police Command, in collaboration with the Oyo State Vigilante Patrol Team, Oluyole chapter, has recovered nine bags of dry leaves suspected to be Cannabis Sativa and 101 wraps of a substance believed to be “Canadian Loud” from a residential apartment in the Olomi-Academy area of Ibadan.

The seizure was made at a residence located behind Omo Okuorun House, Cooperative Building, near the 7Up Bus Stop in Olomi. Authorities say the operation followed actionable intelligence indicating that the apartment was being used as a storage point for a large consignment of illicit drugs.

In a statement issued on Sunday, the Police Public Relations Officer for Oyo State, DSP Olayinka Ayanlade, confirmed the recovery and disclosed that the suspected owner of the drugs, identified as Oluwadamilare Adedayo, is currently at large and being actively pursued by law enforcement agencies.

According to DSP Ayanlade, the police received credible information that Adedayo, described as a male resident of the address in question, was stockpiling illegal substances in his apartment. Acting on the intelligence, detectives were immediately deployed to the scene to verify the report and carry out necessary enforcement measures.

“Prompted by this intelligence, information received indicated that an apartment located along Abanise Street, Academy area, Olomi, Ibadan, was being used to stockpile a large consignment of suspected illicit drugs by one Adedayo (male) of the same address. In response, detectives were promptly deployed to the location to verify and act on the information,” the statement read.

Upon arrival at the premises, security operatives conducted a search which led to the recovery of nine large bags containing dried plant materials suspected to be Cannabis Sativa, along with 101 wraps of a similar substance locally referred to as Canadian Loud — a potent strain of cannabis that has gained popularity in parts of Nigeria’s illicit drug market.

Police sources indicated that the recovered items have been secured as exhibits and will be subjected to forensic analysis to confirm their composition. The operation forms part of ongoing efforts by the Oyo State Police Command to clamp down on drug-related activities and dismantle networks involved in the distribution of controlled substances.

Authorities have not yet disclosed whether any arrests were made during the raid. However, DSP Ayanlade affirmed that efforts are ongoing to apprehend the fleeing suspect and bring him to justice. He urged members of the public with relevant information about the suspect’s whereabouts to cooperate with law enforcement agencies.

The development underscores persistent concerns about the proliferation of illicit drugs in urban communities, particularly in residential neighbourhoods where such activities often go unnoticed. Security experts note that illegal drug distribution networks frequently exploit rented apartments and densely populated areas as concealment hubs for storage and redistribution.

The police reiterated their commitment to sustaining intelligence-driven operations aimed at curbing drug trafficking and related crimes across Oyo State. They also emphasised the importance of community collaboration in identifying suspicious activities and reporting them promptly to authorities.

As investigations continue, the Oyo State Police Command has assured residents that it will intensify surveillance and enforcement actions to ensure that residential communities are not used as bases for criminal enterprises.
