The Nigerian Senate has amended the votes and proceedings of its plenary sitting on Wednesday, February 4, 2026, regarding the provisions of Section 60(3) in the Electoral Act Amendment Bill, specifically focusing on the transmission of election results from polling units.

A motion moved by Senate Chief Whip Mohammed Tahir Monguno and endorsed by the Senate officially adopts electronic transmission of election results as the primary method of collation. However, the Senate clarified that in the event of a communication failure or technical glitch, the EC8 form, which records results at the polling unit — duly entered, stamped, signed by the election officer, and countersigned by party agents — will serve as the primary source for collation.

During the plenary, Senator Enyinnaya Abaribe moved a counter-motion requesting a division vote — that is, individual voting on Section 60(3). The motion was subsequently withdrawn following guidance from Senate President Godswill Akpabio, who encouraged the Senate to proceed with the adopted electronic transmission framework.

The development represents a significant step toward formalising electronic election result transmission in Nigeria, while retaining safeguards to ensure that failures in technology do not compromise the integrity of electoral outcomes.
