The New Nigeria People’s Party has called on Nigeria’s security agencies, including the Department of State Services, to investigate circulating allegations that Senator Rabiu Musa Kwankwaso was listed by the United States as a financier of terrorism.

In statements attributed to party officials, the NNPP urged the DSS and other relevant authorities to verify the authenticity of the claim and clarify its status, arguing that the seriousness of such an allegation requires immediate institutional scrutiny. The party maintained that national security and public confidence in political actors demand transparency and fact-based clarification.

As of the time of this report, there is no official record from the United States government confirming that Kwankwaso, a former governor of Kano State and the NNPP’s presidential candidate in the 2023 general election, has been designated or listed as a terrorism financier by U.S. authorities. A review of publicly available sanctions databases maintained by the U.S. Department of the Treasury’s Office of Foreign Assets Control and official releases from the U.S. Department of State shows no listing bearing his name.

No formal statement has been issued by the U.S. Embassy in Abuja or by the Nigerian Ministry of Foreign Affairs confirming such a designation. Likewise, Nigeria’s security agencies have not publicly acknowledged receiving any official communication from Washington regarding a terror-financing listing tied to Kwankwaso.

Kwankwaso himself has not been formally charged or convicted in Nigeria or the United States for terrorism-related offences. Political observers note that allegations of this nature can significantly affect reputations and political calculations, especially in a highly competitive environment where narratives often spread rapidly through social media before verification.

Security experts emphasise that U.S. terrorism designations follow established legal procedures, including evidence-based review and formal publication in official government registers. Individuals or entities listed are typically identified in publicly accessible sanctions announcements. In the absence of such publication, claims of designation remain unsubstantiated.

The NNPP’s call for investigation appears to reflect concern about reputational damage and the potential implications for national security discourse. Analysts caution that public accusations involving terrorism must be handled with rigorous verification to avoid misinformation, diplomatic strain, or unwarranted political tension.

Until a formal confirmation emerges from U.S. authorities or credible documentary evidence is produced, the allegation remains unverified. Observers say clarity from either American or Nigerian security institutions would help dispel uncertainty and prevent speculation from dominating public discourse.
