Human rights activist and former presidential candidate Omoyele Sowore has publicly alleged that former Kaduna State Governor Nasir El-Rufai was aware of what happened to missing political commentator Abubakar Idris Dadiyata, whose disappearance in 2019 remains unresolved.
Sowore made the claims through his verified account on X, the social media platform formerly known as Twitter, where he directly accused El-Rufai and other political figures of having knowledge of Dadiyata’s abduction. In the posts, Sowore asserted that the operation was allegedly carried out by security agencies during the tenure of the All Progressives Congress at the federal level. He further claimed that officials not only knew who abducted Dadiyata but may have been aware of the reasons behind the act and subsequent developments.
The activist’s remarks suggested that the prolonged silence surrounding the case raises serious concerns. He speculated, without presenting evidence, that Dadiyata may have been killed and secretly buried. Sowore also referenced his own arrest and detention in 2019, alleging that it was politically motivated and involved senior officials of the administration at the time.
As of the time of reporting, there is no publicly available judicial finding, investigative report, or official confirmation substantiating Sowore’s allegations regarding Dadiyata’s fate or implicating El-Rufai or other named individuals. The disappearance of Dadiyata, who was reported abducted from his Kaduna residence on August 2, 2019, remains an open case. Nigerian security agencies have not released conclusive updates establishing responsibility or clarifying his whereabouts.
El-Rufai has previously denied involvement in any unlawful detention or abduction, and no formal charges have been filed against him in connection with Dadiyata’s disappearance. Similarly, there has been no official acknowledgment from law enforcement authorities confirming that the abduction was a state-sanctioned operation.
Civil society groups and human rights advocates have consistently called for an independent and transparent investigation into the case, arguing that unresolved disappearances undermine public trust and democratic accountability. The renewed attention generated by Sowore’s verified social media statement has once again brought the matter into public discourse, prompting calls for clarity and due process.
Until formal investigative findings are released or judicial proceedings establish definitive facts, the claims made on social media remain allegations. The case of Dadiyata continues to be a focal point in discussions about political dissent, security accountability, and human rights protections in Nigeria.
