Akwa Ibom State Governor, Umo Eno, has firmly dismissed concerns arising from reports alleging the transfer of oil wells from the state, assuring residents that there is no threat to Akwa Ibom’s ownership of the disputed assets.
Speaking to Government House correspondents on Sunday, February 15, 2026, upon his arrival at the Victor Attah International Airport, Uyo, the governor said the claims circulating in public space were misleading and unsupported by law. He stressed that two separate judgments of the Supreme Court have conclusively affirmed Akwa Ibom State’s ownership of the oil wells, including the 76 reportedly referenced in recent claims.
Governor Eno expressed strong confidence in the leadership of Bola Ahmed Tinubu, noting that respect for the rule of law remains central to the President’s approach to governance. According to him, no amount of propaganda or political sentiment can override binding decisions of the country’s highest court.
“There are two Supreme Court judgments that give Akwa Ibom State the right to those oil wells,” the governor said. “We are not sharing maritime boundaries with Cross River State but with the Republic of Cameroun, and the Nigerian Supreme Court has said so twice to establish this fact.”
He urged residents to remain calm, insisting that the issue is one of settled law rather than emotion or political agitation. Governor Eno said attempts to stir public anxiety through unverified narratives would not change the legal reality already established by the apex court.
“There is no cause for alarm. The people on the other side may cook up any story they want or raise propaganda, but such claims have no effect in the face of two Supreme Court decisions establishing our ownership of the oil wells. This is not about sentiments,” he said.
Reaffirming his trust in due process, the governor emphasized that Supreme Court rulings cannot be disregarded, particularly when they have been delivered twice on the same matter. He said respect for judicial authority is fundamental to democratic governance and national stability.
“I believe in the administration of President Bola Ahmed Tinubu. I believe that the rule of law will be respected, and I believe that we cannot throw away Supreme Court decisions twice on this particular matter,” Governor Eno stated.
He further argued that if the matter were to be reduced to sentiment, broader territorial issues could equally be reopened, including long-settled boundary arrangements involving communities in Itu Local Government Area. He questioned why the oil wells issue was being revived despite what he described as irrefutable legal facts.
The governor’s position aligns with that of the Revenue Mobilisation Allocation and Fiscal Commission, which has publicly refuted reports suggesting that the oil wells were ceded to Cross River State. The Commission described such claims as false and misleading, reinforcing that no official action had altered existing legal determinations.
Governor Eno echoed this position, stressing that facts must take precedence over speculation. “Facts are sacrosanct, and you cannot push them under the carpet with sentiments. Let our people remain calm because our President is a man who respects the rule of law,” he said.
Beyond the political reassurance, the governor demonstrated his hands-on approach to governance by proceeding from the airport to inspect ongoing infrastructure projects. He visited the Airport Hospital under construction, ahead of the April target set for the commencement of international flight operations, assessing progress and readiness.
He also stopped at the Dakkada Luxury Estate, where he reviewed the pace and quality of work, directing contractors to ensure strict adherence to agreed specifications and timelines.
The governor’s remarks and inspections appeared aimed at reinforcing both legal certainty and developmental focus, as the state continues to balance governance priorities with public concerns over resource control and economic stability.
