The Bauchi State Police Command has confirmed the rescue of a middle-aged man who was allegedly confined and kept in leg chains by his father for approximately 17 years in Bauchi State.

According to police authorities, the discovery followed actionable intelligence received by officers regarding the prolonged confinement of an adult male within a residential compound in the state. Acting on the report, operatives visited the location and found the victim restrained with chains around his legs in what officials described as degrading and inhumane conditions.

Preliminary investigations indicate that the man had been kept in isolation for nearly two decades. Police sources said the father claimed the confinement was linked to concerns about the victim’s mental health and behavioral instability. However, law enforcement authorities stated that no individual has the legal authority to subject another person to prolonged physical restraint without due process or medical supervision in accordance with the law.

The victim was immediately freed from the chains and transported to a medical facility for evaluation and treatment. Medical personnel are currently assessing his physical and psychological condition after what authorities described as extended deprivation of normal social interaction and mobility.

Police confirmed that the father has been taken into custody for questioning. Investigations are ongoing to determine the full circumstances surrounding the case, including whether other individuals were complicit in maintaining the confinement over the years. Authorities are also examining potential charges under relevant provisions of Nigeria’s criminal laws relating to unlawful confinement, assault and violation of human rights.

Human rights advocates have condemned the incident, describing it as a serious violation of dignity and fundamental rights. Legal analysts note that while families sometimes struggle to manage relatives with mental health conditions, the law requires that such cases be addressed through appropriate medical channels and lawful procedures rather than private detention.

Community members in the area expressed shock at the revelation, with some residents stating they were unaware of the extent of the confinement. Others acknowledged that stigma surrounding mental health issues in parts of the country can lead families to resort to extreme measures instead of seeking professional care.

The Bauchi State Police Command reiterated its commitment to safeguarding the rights of all residents and urged members of the public to report suspected cases of abuse, unlawful confinement or neglect. Authorities emphasized that protecting vulnerable individuals remains a priority and that those found culpable will face prosecution in accordance with the law.

Further updates are expected as investigations progress and medical assessments of the rescued man continue.
