The National Emergency Management Agency has conducted an on-the-spot assessment following a fatal windstorm that struck Awhum Community in Udi Local Government Area of Enugu State, leaving 11 people dead and seven others injured.
The incident occurred on 17 February 2026 at approximately 7:20 p.m., after heavy rainfall accompanied by strong winds swept through the area. During the storm, a large roadside tree was uprooted and collapsed onto a section of the road, crushing vehicles and damaging surrounding property.
Preliminary findings from a joint assessment carried out by NEMA’s Enugu Operations Office, in collaboration with the Enugu State Emergency Management Agency and the Nigerian Red Cross Society, confirmed that the fallen tree caused extensive destruction. Two vehicles—a commercial bus and a Toyota Sienna—were reportedly damaged beyond repair. Several roadside shops and goods were also destroyed.
Emergency responders confirmed that seven individuals sustained varying degrees of injuries and are currently receiving medical treatment at nearby health facilities. Eleven others lost their lives in the incident, marking one of the deadliest weather-related accidents recorded in the area in recent years.
Although debris from the uprooted tree remained visible during the initial assessment, authorities confirmed that affected portions of the roadway had been cleared to restore vehicular movement and reduce the risk of further accidents. Local volunteers and emergency workers reportedly worked through the night to remove obstructions and assist victims.
Mrs. Chukwu Shantel, who led the NEMA assessment team, expressed condolences to the bereaved families and the wider Awhum community. She stated that the Federal Government was deeply concerned by the scale of the tragedy and emphasized that the purpose of the visit was to evaluate the extent of the damage and identify immediate humanitarian needs.
According to NEMA officials, the assessment will guide the provision of appropriate relief interventions for affected families and business owners whose livelihoods were disrupted. The agency indicated that findings would be compiled into a formal report to support coordinated response efforts between federal and state authorities.
Mrs. Shantel also used the opportunity to urge residents to adopt preventive measures, particularly by regularly inspecting and removing weak or aging trees near roads and residential areas. She stressed that proactive environmental management can significantly reduce the risk of similar incidents during periods of heavy rainfall and high winds.
Community leaders acknowledged the rapid response by emergency agencies. Speaking on behalf of residents, the President General of Awhum Community, Nze Charles Ike, thanked both federal and state authorities for their swift intervention. He appealed for additional support to cushion the economic and emotional impact of the disaster on affected families.
Local residents described the storm as sudden and intense, with powerful gusts that uprooted trees and disrupted electricity infrastructure. Power supply in parts of the community was temporarily affected due to damaged lines and poles. Technicians have since commenced repairs to restore normal service.
Weather-related incidents have become an increasing concern in several parts of southeastern Nigeria, particularly during periods of seasonal rainfall. Experts note that aging roadside trees, inadequate drainage systems, and limited routine maintenance can amplify the destructive impact of storms.
Humanitarian observers say the loss of life in Awhum underscores the importance of integrating disaster risk reduction strategies into community planning. They emphasize that early warning systems, routine environmental inspections, and public awareness campaigns are essential components of preparedness.
As the community mourns the victims, efforts are underway to provide psychosocial support to affected families. Religious and traditional leaders have organized prayer sessions and community meetings aimed at offering comfort and solidarity during the grieving process.
