Residents of Tangaza Town in Sokoto State were thrown into panic late last night after suspected bandits launched an attack around 11 p.m., striking an area located only a few metres from security checkpoints operated by the Nigeria Police Force and the Nigeria Customs Service, as well as a police bomb squad unit positioned near Tangaza General Hospital.

Local sources said the attackers arrived under the cover of darkness and opened fire sporadically, causing residents and traders in the vicinity to flee for safety. Witnesses reported that the gunmen operated briefly before withdrawing into surrounding areas. Security personnel reportedly responded, but the attackers had already left the immediate scene by the time reinforcement units mobilized.

The attack resulted in the death of Yahaya Alhassan, popularly known locally as “Gurmu,” who was shot during the assault. Another individual identified as Bello BMT sustained gunshot injuries and is currently receiving medical treatment at Tangaza General Hospital.

Residents expressed shock that the attack occurred so close to multiple security formations, raising concerns about the operational reach and mobility of armed groups in the region. Community members described the incident as particularly alarming given the presence of law enforcement checkpoints and specialized units in the area.

Security analysts say bandit attacks in parts of northwestern Nigeria have increasingly demonstrated tactical mobility, with armed groups exploiting difficult terrain and conducting rapid strikes before withdrawing. The proximity of the attack to security installations highlights the continuing challenge of maintaining constant surveillance along rural transit corridors.

Authorities have not yet issued a detailed official statement confirming the number of attackers or whether any arrests were made following the incident. Investigations are expected to focus on determining the route used by the assailants and assessing whether advance intelligence could have prevented the attack.

Tangaza Local Government Area has experienced periodic violence linked to banditry over the past years. Residents often rely on checkpoint patrols and community vigilance groups for protection, although the effectiveness of these arrangements has been tested by the adaptability of armed networks.

Humanitarian observers warn that repeated attacks on rural towns in the northwest contribute to displacement, economic disruption, and reduced agricultural activity. Markets and nighttime commercial activities are particularly vulnerable when security coverage is perceived as uncertain.

Community leaders have appealed to security agencies to strengthen patrols around Tangaza Town and surrounding settlements, particularly during evening hours when attacks are more likely to occur. They also urged residents to remain vigilant and report suspicious movements.

The bodies of the deceased and injured have been handled according to local emergency protocols, and family members have begun mourning arrangements for the victim who lost his life in the attack.

As investigations continue, authorities face renewed pressure to address the persistent security threats confronting rural communities in Sokoto State and the broader northwest region.
