Troops of the Nigerian Army’s 6 Brigade under Sector 3 of Operation Whirl Stroke have intercepted a suspected gun-runner and recovered a substantial cache of weapons and ammunition in Taraba State, military authorities confirmed in a series of statements and local media reports. The operation, described as intelligence-led and part of ongoing efforts to suppress arms trafficking and criminality, took place on February 21, 2026, in Sarkin Kudu, a community in Ibi Local Government Area of the state.

According to the official Nigerian Army statement, vigilant soldiers on sentry duty acting on “actionable and credible intelligence” flagged down an Audi vehicle bearing Abuja registration plates. A thorough stop-and-search of the vehicle uncovered two AK-47 rifles along with 969 rounds of ammunition concealed within. Additional items discovered in the vehicle included 197 empty magazines, one box of 7.62×51mm NATO ammunition with 250 rounds, 14 packs of 9mm Parabellum ammunition totalling 700 rounds, and 19 rounds of 7.62mm special ammunition.

The suspect, identified as 48-year-old Monday Reuben from Numan Local Government Area in neighboring Adamawa State, was taken into custody at the scene. Military authorities also recovered more than ₦2.4 million in cash, multiple identification cards, ATM cards, two mobile phones, a power bank, bottles of perfume, local charms and other personal effects. The suspect and all seized items remain in military custody pending handover to prosecutorial authorities for further investigation and legal action.

The Commander of 6 Brigade/Sector 3, Brigadier General Chukwuemeka Michael Akaliro, commended the troops for their alertness and professionalism, emphasising the need to sustain the operational tempo to deter criminal elements and protect lives and property in the state. He noted that the military would continue to uphold a rewards and sanctions policy to encourage diligence among officers and soldiers engaged in similar operations.

Officials have linked the interception to broader efforts by security forces to stamp out the proliferation of illegal arms and ammunition across Taraba and surrounding regions. The recovered weapons and ammunition are seen as part of illicit supply chains that fuel a range of security challenges, from armed robbery and kidnapping to communal violence and insurgent activities. Analysts say intercepting such consignments before they reach end-users is critical to weakening the operational capabilities of criminal networks.

Taraba State, located in Nigeria’s North-East and sharing borders with conflict-prone states such as Bauchi State and Adamawa State, has in recent years experienced periodic outbreaks of violence including cattle rustling, communal clashes, and armed banditry. Security agencies have stepped up patrols and intelligence-driven operations in remote corridors and along major transit routes in response to concerns that traffickers exploit the region’s rugged terrain and porous stretches of road.

Community reactions to the operation were cautiously optimistic, with local leaders welcoming the action as evidence that security forces remain vigilant. Some residents emphasised the importance of ongoing cooperation between civilians and uniformed personnel, arguing that grassroots intelligence often provides critical leads that enable successful interdictions. Others, however, stressed that long-term peace and stability will require more than periodic seizures; sustained economic opportunities and strengthened governance structures are necessary to address the root causes of arms trafficking and criminality.

Security analysts have noted that the Nigerian Army’s Operation Whirl Stroke, which spans multiple states across the North-East and North-Central regions, has increasingly focused on disrupting logistics networks that feed criminal and insurgent activities. This includes routine stop-and-search checkpoints, patrols along major roadways, and collaboration with other security agencies to monitor and interdict suspicious movements. Evidence from recent operations underscores the complexity of arms supply chains and the need for coordinated responses that combine enforcement with community engagement.

The recovered ammunition will undergo forensic and ballistic analysis to determine its origin and any linkages to known trafficking patterns or prior incidents of violence. Such analysis aids intelligence units in mapping distribution networks and anticipating future movements, officials said. Arms trafficking remains a significant challenge throughout Nigeria, where porous borders and informal trade routes facilitate the clandestine movement of weapons and ammunition.

Legal experts in Abuja and regional capitals said that the prosecution of individuals arrested in connection with weapons trafficking plays a deterrent role if carried through to conviction. They noted that the judicial process must be robust and transparent to reassure communities that justice is being served and to reduce incentives for others to engage in arms smuggling.

While the recent interception marks a tactical success for the Nigerian Army and reinforces the effectiveness of intelligence-led operations, security officials emphasise that sustained pressure on supply routes and traffickers will be necessary. Continued instability in neighbouring regions contributes to the persistent flow of illicit arms, and a comprehensive response will require inter-agency cooperation, regional security partnerships and domestic policy measures to regulate the movement of weapons.

The arrest and seizure have been widely reported by Nigerian media outlets and confirmed by military public relations channels, highlighting the army’s commitment to its mandate under directives from senior defence leadership. As the investigation progresses, authorities have pledged to share further details with the public and to pursue legal recourse against those found culpable.
