The family of Osas Azenabor has renewed urgent calls for answers from the Lagos State Police Command, more than a year after he was allegedly taken into custody by police in Lagos and has not been seen or accounted for since.
According to the family, Azenabor was arrested on November 1, 2024 during a police raid in the Mile 12 area of Lagos. Before he disappeared, he was reportedly taken to the Ketu Police Station after being arrested. An eyewitness at the scene said they saw him in handcuffs inside a police mini-bus and assisted him in contacting his wife shortly after the arrest.
When Azenabor’s wife arrived at the station to bail him out, officers allegedly told her he was not at that location. Despite later inquiries at multiple police divisions — including Ogudu and Oshodi stations — and visits to correctional facilities such as Badagry Prison and Kirikiri, there has been no record of his presence. The family says their inquiries have repeatedly drawn blank responses from police personnel.
His father, Francis Azenabor, told reporters that he even encountered one of the officers believed to have detained his son shortly after the arrest. When the father approached him for information, the officer reportedly responded angrily and refused to speak. According to the family, a senior police officer at one point ordered that some officers connected to the arrest be detained, but they were later released without explanation.
The family has also sought legal assistance, visited multiple police units, and attempted to track his whereabouts through official channels, but all attempts have so far been fruitless. Francis said he needs help from higher authorities within the Police Force and the Nigeria Police Force to find his son, stressing that it has been almost two years since he last saw him.
The Lagos State Police Public Relations Officer had not responded to enquiries from reporters as of the time of publication, and the state’s Commissioner of Police had also not publicly commented on the unresolved disappearance.
The case has drawn wider public concern because of the prolonged lack of information provided to the family, and it reflects broader anxieties about police custody procedures and accountability in Nigeria.
