Residents of Dangani town in Musawa Local Government Area of Katsina State were thrown into panic on Thursday afternoon when armed bandits stormed the community shortly before the weekly Juma’at congregational prayer, looting homes, shops and businesses in a brazen daylight raid that left residents counting heavy financial losses during the holy month of Ramadan.

According to residents and local security sources, the attackers arrived in the town in broad daylight, moving through streets and market areas while brandishing weapons. Witnesses said the armed men went from shop to shop seizing mobile phones, cash, fabrics, fuel and other goods belonging to traders and residents. The raid reportedly lasted for a significant period as the attackers operated with little resistance before eventually retreating from the community.

Residents said the timing of the attack heightened the shock and emotional impact because it occurred during Ramadan, a period when Muslim communities traditionally observe fasting and heightened religious devotion. The raid also took place just before Juma’at prayer, when many residents were preparing to gather in mosques for the weekly congregational service.

According to eyewitnesses, many traders had just concluded their morning business activities and were preparing to close their shops to attend the Friday prayer when the bandits entered the town. During the raid, the attackers reportedly seized the day’s earnings from traders and collected valuables from households and roadside vendors.

Several shop owners said they lost both cash and merchandise during the attack. Some traders reported that the gunmen forced them to surrender money earned from the day’s sales, while others said the attackers looted phones and electronics displayed for sale in their shops. Residents also reported that fuel stored in containers and fabrics from local stores were among the items taken by the armed men.

Witnesses described scenes of panic as residents attempted to flee or hide while the bandits moved through the town. Some residents reportedly abandoned their shops and homes to avoid confrontation with the attackers, who were said to be carrying firearms and issuing threats to anyone who resisted.

The raid has added to growing security concerns in Musawa Local Government Area, where several communities have experienced repeated attacks by bandits in recent years. The region has become one of the flashpoints of rural insecurity in north-western Nigeria, where armed groups often carry out raids, kidnappings and cattle rustling.

Security analysts say bandits operating in the north-west frequently target rural communities where security presence is limited. In many cases, attackers ride into villages on motorcycles, loot property, abduct residents or demand ransom payments before retreating to nearby forests or remote hideouts.

Musawa Local Government Area has been particularly affected by such attacks. In recent incidents within the same area, armed bandits have launched night raids on communities, killing residents and abducting civilians. In one earlier attack in the Dangani axis, gunmen killed a member of the Katsina State Community Watch Corps and fled with his service rifle during a violent confrontation with local security volunteers.

Local vigilante groups and community security volunteers have frequently attempted to resist attacks in the area, but residents say the heavily armed bandits often outgun them. In several cases, communities have been forced to rely on their own local defense groups while waiting for security reinforcements to arrive.

Residents of Dangani said the latest raid demonstrates the increasing boldness of bandit groups operating in the region. Unlike many previous attacks that occurred at night, the assailants carried out the operation in broad daylight, raising concerns about the security of rural towns and the ability of authorities to deter attacks.

Community members also expressed frustration over the economic impact of the raid. Many traders depend on daily sales to sustain their families, and the loss of both cash and merchandise during the attack has left several households struggling financially.

Stone Reporters note that banditry has become one of the most persistent security challenges in north-western Nigeria, particularly in states such as Katsina, Zamfara, Sokoto and parts of Niger. Armed groups operating in these regions often rely on kidnapping for ransom, cattle rustling and looting as sources of income.

The continued attacks have forced many rural residents to abandon farming activities and relocate to safer areas. In some communities, people have reportedly fled their homes and sought refuge in neighboring towns or urban centers to escape recurring raids by bandits.

Security agencies have conducted several operations in Katsina State in an effort to dismantle bandit camps and rescue kidnapped victims. In February 2026, a coordinated operation involving the Department of State Services, the Nigerian Army, police and the Katsina State Community Watch Corps led to the rescue of 21 kidnapped victims from a bandit enclave in Musawa Local Government Area.

Despite such operations, residents say attacks continue to occur in remote communities where bandits exploit forest terrain and limited security presence to carry out raids.

Following the Dangani attack, residents have called for increased security patrols and stronger protection for rural communities in Musawa Local Government Area. Community leaders say improved intelligence gathering, deployment of additional security personnel and stronger collaboration with local vigilante groups could help deter future attacks.

As of the time of reporting, there has been no official statement from the Katsina State Police Command regarding the latest raid in Dangani. However, residents hope authorities will investigate the incident and strengthen security measures to prevent further attacks in the area.

For many residents of the community, the attack has left a lingering sense of fear during what should be a period of spiritual reflection and communal peace in the holy month of Ramadan.
