Troops of the Nigerian Army operating under Operation EASTERN SANITY have successfully rescued 12 kidnapped victims in Ette Community within Igbo‑Eze North Local Government Area of Enugu State following an intelligence-driven response to a distress call reporting the abduction of several residents by suspected kidnappers.

The rescue operation was conducted on Friday, March 6, 2026, after security authorities received urgent information about the abduction of community members by armed criminal elements believed to be operating within the Ette community environment. Military officials stated that the operation reflected the continuing strategy of maintaining rapid reaction capability in vulnerable communities across southeastern Nigeria.

According to security sources, troops deployed from the 82 Division Garrison mobilised immediately after receiving the alert. The response involved coordination with Nigerian Police Force operatives, local Forest Guard personnel and members of the Neighbourhood Watch security network operating within the community. The multi-agency collaboration was designed to maximise search coverage and increase pressure on the suspected kidnappers believed to be hiding within nearby forest terrain.

Upon arrival in the suspected operational zone, the troops launched aggressive search and combat patrols across surrounding bush paths, settlements and possible hideout corridors. Military commanders explained that the objective was to locate both the abductors and the victims while preventing the criminals from relocating the hostages deeper into forested areas.

Security sources reported that the rapid deployment and visible combat readiness of the troops disrupted the activities of the suspected kidnappers. Facing what officials described as overwhelming operational pressure, the criminal suspects allegedly abandoned the abducted individuals and fled the location before security forces could establish full contact with them.

Following the abandonment of the hostages, troops immediately secured the area and conducted further pursuit operations targeting the fleeing suspects. Although the primary gang members escaped during the confrontation, security personnel were able to apprehend two individuals suspected of having connections to the kidnapping network.

Military investigators have since begun interrogating the arrested suspects in an effort to gather intelligence about the structure, membership and operational movement of the criminal gang. Authorities believe the information obtained may assist in identifying additional accomplices and locating possible hideouts used by the group within or around the community.

All 12 rescued victims were confirmed to have been recovered unharmed. Security officials said preliminary medical and welfare assessments were conducted at a secure location following the rescue to ensure that the victims did not sustain physical injuries during their period of captivity.

Community sources indicated that the abduction had generated significant anxiety among residents of Ette Community, an agrarian settlement where many families depend on farming activities. Local leaders reported that the kidnapping incident temporarily disrupted normal economic and social life as residents feared possible expansion of criminal activity in surrounding villages.

The successful rescue has been widely described by security authorities as another operational achievement under the ongoing counter-criminal campaign in southeastern Nigeria. Military commanders emphasised that the mission reflects the doctrine of intelligence-led intervention combined with rapid tactical deployment in response to civilian distress alerts.

Security officials stressed that maintaining pressure on criminal networks remains essential to restoring confidence among residents of vulnerable communities. The South-East region has experienced intermittent kidnapping incidents in recent years, with criminal groups exploiting forested environments and difficult terrain to carry out abductions and extortion activities.

Authorities stated that patrols across Ette community and adjoining settlements have been intensified following the operation. Troops are expected to maintain surveillance activities, including night patrols and coordinated reconnaissance missions, to prevent the re-emergence of criminal elements in the area.

The leadership of the Nigerian Army reiterated its commitment to protecting civilian populations while sustaining offensive pressure against kidnappers, insurgent groups and other violent criminals operating across the region. Military spokespersons said ongoing operations would continue to rely on intelligence sharing from local residents, community security volunteers and inter-agency collaboration.

Stone Reporters note that kidnapping remains a major security challenge in parts of Nigeria, particularly in forest-bordered communities where criminal groups exploit limited security visibility. Analysts argue that sustained military presence, community vigilance and socioeconomic development are necessary components of long-term stability.

Residents of Ette Community expressed gratitude to the troops for the successful rescue, describing the operation as a relief after the traumatic abduction incident. Community leaders urged security agencies to continue patrols in surrounding areas and called on citizens to report suspicious movements promptly.

As investigations continue, authorities are working to track down the remaining members of the kidnapping gang believed to have escaped during the patrol encounter. Security officials stated that intelligence operations would be expanded to dismantle the network and prevent future attacks.

The operation adds to a series of recent counter-kidnapping successes recorded by security forces in southeastern Nigeria, reinforcing the government’s stated objective of restoring safety across vulnerable rural communities.
