Dr. (Mrs) Nonye Soludo, wife of the Chukwuma Soludo, delivered a formal statement marking the 2026 International Women’s Day, urging women across Nigeria to take active roles in leadership, governance, and societal transformation. In her address, she emphasized that meaningful progress for women requires participation at the decision-making table, rather than remaining on the sidelines of political, social, and economic arenas.

Addressing the challenges faced by women and girls, Dr. Soludo called for a reassessment of advocacy strategies, warning against approaches overly tied to partisanship that might dilute effectiveness. She stressed that women must now be central in shaping their own destiny, particularly through political involvement. Highlighting the low numbers of women in politics, she encouraged aspiring female leaders to take bold steps toward becoming change-makers, promising institutional and community support for those willing to lead.

The First Lady commended initiatives such as the recent proposal by the Oluremi Tinubu for mandatory seats for women in the National Assembly, describing it as a critical model for fair representation. Dr. Soludo called for similar considerations at the State Houses of Assembly level to ensure comprehensive impact and inclusive representation.

Dr. Soludo highlighted the theme for the day, “Empower Her, Elevate All,” emphasizing that discussions on women’s empowerment must extend beyond symbolic advocacy to tangible actions and results. She urged stakeholders to focus on solutions that provide women and girls opportunities to thrive free from harassment, workplace discrimination, social injustices, and cultural marginalization. She underscored that empowering one woman effectively strengthens an entire generation.

Detailing the achievements of the Solution Administration, she noted the administration’s efforts to enhance women’s welfare and opportunities: free education from primary to secondary school, free antenatal care and delivery services, cervical cancer screenings benefiting over 10,000 women, the establishment of a dedicated magistrate court for gender violence cases, recruitment of over 8,000 teachers with significant female representation, and the creation of competitive platforms within the civil service for women to advance professionally.

Dr. Soludo also highlighted her personal initiative through the NGO “Healthy Living with Nonye Soludo,” which trains women to prioritize health and well-being while cultivating leadership and community engagement. Hundreds of women now lead community programs and wellness initiatives across Anambra State, embodying the principles of empowerment and societal contribution. She underscored that such programs equip women to make lasting, practical impacts in their communities.

The First Lady concluded by calling for unity among Anambra women to strengthen their collective voice, urging them to support one another in advancing opportunities for growth, leadership, and societal impact. She commended the organizers of the International Women’s Day celebration and reaffirmed her commitment to driving initiatives that empower women and elevate communities in Anambra State and beyond.

Stone Reporters note that Dr. Nonye Soludo’s address reinforces a growing emphasis on actionable women’s empowerment, combining policy advocacy, political engagement, health, and community development as pillars of sustainable progress for women in Nigeria.
