Funeral prayers have been held for at least 15 residents killed in a deadly attack by suspected bandits in Dansoda village, located in the Magaji Wando district of Dandume Local Government Area of Katsina State, as communities across the region continue to grapple with renewed violence linked to armed criminal groups.

The victims were buried according to Islamic rites on Wednesday morning following the attack, which occurred late Tuesday evening when armed men stormed the village and opened fire on residents. Witnesses said the gunmen arrived in large numbers and began shooting sporadically, creating panic as people attempted to flee for safety.

Residents said the attack took place around 8:00 p.m., shortly after many villagers had finished breaking their Ramadan fast and were gathered outside their homes or sitting under trees to relax. The sudden sound of gunfire sent people running in different directions, but several were struck by bullets during the chaos.

According to local accounts, the attackers targeted civilians indiscriminately as they moved through the community. After the gunmen eventually withdrew from the area, villagers cautiously returned to the scene and discovered several bodies lying in different parts of the village. Initial counts indicated that at least 11 people were killed in the Dansoda attack, while others sustained injuries.

Community members and local authorities later organized burial arrangements for the victims. The funeral prayers were held early Wednesday morning in line with Islamic traditions, which typically require the deceased to be buried as soon as possible after death. Relatives, neighbours, and community leaders gathered to mourn the victims, many of whom were described as farmers and local residents with no connection to armed groups.

While the attack in Dansoda accounted for most of the casualties, violence was also reported in another Katsina community the same day. In Jikamshi village in Musawa Local Government Area, gunmen carried out a separate assault that left several people dead and others injured.

Police authorities confirmed that the attack in Jikamshi occurred at about 6:05 p.m. on Tuesday when suspected bandits invaded the village armed with dangerous weapons. According to the Katsina State Police Command, the attackers injured several residents during the raid before security forces arrived at the scene.

The police said a joint team of security personnel led by the Divisional Police Officer in Musawa responded quickly to the distress call and engaged the gunmen in a gun battle. Although the attackers eventually fled the area, several residents had already sustained gunshot wounds.

Victims from the attack were rushed to nearby hospitals for treatment. Medical personnel later confirmed that three of the injured victims died from their wounds, while eleven others were receiving treatment for injuries sustained during the assault.

The killings in Dansoda and Jikamshi are part of a continuing pattern of bandit attacks affecting communities across Katsina State and the wider northwestern region of Nigeria. Armed groups operating in the region frequently target rural settlements, carrying out killings, kidnappings, cattle rustling, and raids on villages.

Security analysts say these groups typically operate in large numbers and are often heavily armed with automatic weapons. They frequently arrive on motorcycles, allowing them to move quickly between remote communities and escape into nearby forests after attacks.

Residents in Dandume and Musawa local government areas say attacks have become increasingly frequent over the past few years, forcing many villagers to live under constant fear. Farmers in particular have been heavily affected, as insecurity has made it dangerous to work on farmland or travel between villages.

Local leaders have repeatedly appealed to the federal and state governments to strengthen security operations in the area. Communities have called for more military deployments, improved intelligence gathering, and stronger collaboration between security agencies and local vigilante groups.

Katsina State lies in Nigeria’s northwest, a region that has become a major hotspot for banditry and rural violence. Armed gangs operate across several states including Katsina, Zamfara, Sokoto, and Kaduna, exploiting difficult terrain, forests, and weak security presence in rural areas.

In recent years, Nigerian security forces have launched multiple operations aimed at dismantling bandit networks and their camps in forests across the region. Some operations have led to the killing or arrest of suspected bandits, but attacks on communities have continued despite these efforts.

Local officials say the latest killings highlight the urgent need for sustained security intervention to protect vulnerable rural communities. Residents also worry that ongoing violence could further disrupt farming activities and worsen economic hardship in the region.

Stone Reporters note that the burial of the victims in Dansoda reflects the human toll of the continuing security crisis in Nigeria’s northwest. As families mourn their loved ones, communities across Katsina remain on edge amid fears that further attacks could occur if stronger security measures are not implemented.
