The Minister of the Federal Capital Territory, Nyesom Wike, has assured the diplomatic community in Abuja of the government’s ongoing commitment to providing a secure and enabling environment for them to carry out their work. The remarks were made during the Saint Patrick’s Day reception and the official opening of the new Embassy of Ireland building, where Wike highlighted efforts to transform Abuja into a modern, globally competitive capital.

Speaking at the European Union Complex, Wike emphasized that security, infrastructure, and urban development are central to the administration’s plans. He noted that since the current government assumed office, improvements in safety and city management have been noticeable, and he pledged that these efforts would continue. “We owe you a duty to create the right environment for you to work and thrive,” he said, stressing that diplomatic missions would benefit from enhanced security and support.

The event was attended by Ireland’s Minister of Public Expenditure, Infrastructure, Public Service Reform and Digitalisation, Jack Chambers, Ireland’s Ambassador to Nigeria, Peter Ryan, and other members of the diplomatic corps. Wike congratulated the Ambassador on both Saint Patrick’s Day and the inauguration of the new embassy building, describing it as an important milestone in Nigeria-Ireland relations.

The minister also touched on a personal note regarding a potential visit to Ireland. He mentioned that the new Ambassador-Designate of Ireland to Nigeria, Onyeche Okocha, is from his local government area and has a distinguished professional background, making this an appropriate moment to strengthen bilateral ties.

In addition to diplomatic outreach, Wike addressed issues regarding land use in Abuja. He urged foreign missions to develop plots allocated to them, citing a recent incident where undeveloped embassy land was taken over by a land grabber who began construction. Wike stated that the FCTA has written to embassies to reclaim and develop their land, emphasizing that rule of law and orderly urban planning are priorities for the administration.

Wike stressed that the government is committed to balancing international engagement with proper land management and civic development, noting that actions taken may not always be popular but are necessary for orderly growth and protection of property rights.

The FCT Minister’s remarks come as part of broader efforts to enhance Abuja’s infrastructure, enforce urban planning regulations, and ensure that the city remains a secure, attractive, and functional capital for diplomatic and international activities. By highlighting both security improvements and development priorities, Wike sought to reassure foreign missions that Abuja continues to provide a conducive environment for their work while also demonstrating the government’s commitment to orderly and transparent administration of the territory.
