A teenager from Delta State, identified as Chike, was shot dead by suspected cultists while visiting a friend in the Ikotun area of Lagos State. According to local reports, Chike had traveled to Lagos for a social visit when the attack occurred, reigniting concerns about violent youth gang activity in the city.

Eyewitnesses said the teenager and his friend had just withdrawn money from a Point-of-Sale outlet when a group of youths approached them. The attackers allegedly exchanged brief words with the pair before one of them fired a gun at Chike at close range. The assailants then fled, leaving the teenager fatally wounded, while his friend escaped unharmed. Residents in the area raised the alarm and rushed to the scene, finding Chike lying motionless.

Community members and anti-cultism advocates have described the shooting as cult-related. Some accounts indicate that the attackers shouted gang-related phrases during the assault and that Chike had attempted to hand over his cash and valuables in an effort to spare his life, but was shot regardless. These details have circulated widely on social media, although they have not been independently verified by security officials.

Chike, also known by the nickname “Ejanla,” was reported to have lived in Asaba, Delta State, and was visiting Lagos when the incident occurred. Neighbors and residents expressed shock and anger, highlighting the prevalence of cultist violence in suburban areas of Lagos despite police efforts to curb such activities.

Cult violence in Lagos and other Nigerian cities often stems from rivalries among youth gangs and campus confraternities. These groups are known for territorial disputes, armed robbery, and violent confrontations. Over the years, authorities have conducted targeted crackdowns and arrests, especially during periods associated with gang initiations. However, experts note that enforcement is often reactive, and socioeconomic factors such as unemployment and lack of youth engagement contribute to the persistence of such gangs.

In response to Chike’s death, residents and local leaders have called for increased police presence in affected communities, stronger community surveillance, and the implementation of youth rehabilitation and engagement programs to prevent future attacks. Community members also urged the police to investigate swiftly and apprehend those responsible, while addressing the underlying factors that fuel gang activity.

The tragic incident underscores the risks faced by young people traveling or visiting outside their home states, particularly in areas where armed gangs operate with relative ease. Authorities are expected to follow up on eyewitness reports and community tips, and there is growing public pressure on the Lagos State Government to provide updates on the investigation and take measures to restore safety in affected neighborhoods.
