Lagos, Nigeria — Security forces have averted a potential crisis in Lagos State after troops attached to Operation MESA arrested a man found in possession of suspected explosive devices, including 36 hand grenades, during an operation in Ikorodu Local Government Area. The swift intervention prevented possible harm and highlighted ongoing vigilance by security agencies in the city.
The incident occurred on the evening of March 21, 2026, when intelligence reports alerted military personnel to the presence of a civilian moving through the Agric area of Ikorodu with what was believed to be a cache of explosives during a public event. Troops were promptly deployed to the scene, securing the location and detaining the suspect without incident.
Authorities reported that the suspect, identified as a native of Osun State but residing in Ikorodu, was found with 36 suspected hand grenades. The items were recovered and transferred to a secure facility where military explosives experts are verifying their authenticity and assessing their origin.
The arrest unfolded amid heightened security awareness in Lagos, with troops acting on specific intelligence rather than as part of a broader alert. The response prioritized public safety, and the area was secured to ensure that the situation did not escalate.
Following the arrest, security personnel briefed organisers and participants at the event where the suspect was encountered. Attendees were reassured that the situation was fully under control and were urged to remain vigilant and report any suspicious activity.
The suspect and the recovered devices remain in custody as investigations continue. Authorities have not disclosed the suspect’s possible motives or affiliations, citing the ongoing nature of the probe. Security officials are also examining whether the individual acted alone or if a wider network is involved.
Operation MESA, under which the arrest was conducted, continues to support internal security operations across Nigeria, working to monitor, respond to, and prevent potential threats to public safety.
Residents and community leaders in the Agric and wider Ikorodu area expressed relief at the prompt intervention, noting that social and business activities continued without disruption once the situation was under control.
Authorities emphasised the importance of public cooperation in maintaining security, urging residents to report any suspicious behavior to prevent criminal or violent activity. The arrest underscores the ongoing challenges faced by security agencies in protecting densely populated urban areas and the critical role of intelligence-led operations in preempting potential threats.
