The chairman of Ishielu Local Government Area in Ebonyi State, Ifeoma Peace Agwu, has denied any role in the alleged assault of a state journalist, asserting that accusations against her are unfounded.
The incident involved Benjamin Nworie, a veteran journalist and former Vice Chairman of the Nigeria Union of Journalists in Ebonyi State, who alleged that he was attacked at his home in Ugwuechara, Abakaliki, by suspected political thugs linked to the local government chairman. Nworie, who reports for THISDAY Newspapers, said the attackers assaulted him over a dispute regarding bamboo materials placed near his entrance gate. He claimed the men dragged him, punched him in the face and mouth, and threatened him and his family before neighbours intervened.
In response, Agwu stated that she had no direct or indirect involvement in the attack and challenged the journalist to provide evidence linking her to the incident. Her office described the accusations as false and damaging to her reputation and demanded a public retraction and apology.
The alleged incident has sparked concern among media practitioners and civil society groups, highlighting ongoing challenges around the safety of journalists in politically charged environments. Observers have emphasised the need for thorough investigations by security agencies to establish the facts and ensure accountability, while protecting journalists from harassment and violence.
Community members in Ebonyi have reacted with mixed views, expressing sympathy for the journalist while also urging due process and impartial investigations. The case underscores broader national concerns about press freedom, the responsibilities of public officials, and the protection of media practitioners operating in regions affected by political tensions.
