At least 10 people have died and 20 others were injured following a severe road accident on Monday morning along the Tafa–Gujeni route in Malam Tanko, within the Tafa Local Government Area of Niger State, Nigeria. The tragedy occurred when a speeding tanker truck illegally conveying passengers lost control and crashed, underscoring ongoing concerns over road safety and unlawful transport practices.

According to the Federal Road Safety Corps, the accident happened at approximately 8:20 a.m. when a tanker truck carrying 33 male occupants alongside goods veered off the road after the driver reportedly lost control due to excessive speed. The collision resulted in multiple fatalities, with many victims suffering life-threatening injuries.

Emergency responders from the FRSC’s Tafa Outpost were among the first on the scene. They worked to rescue survivors, clear the wreckage, and restore traffic flow. Rescue efforts yielded 23 survivors, who were immediately evacuated for medical treatment, while the deceased were transported to the Umar Musa General Hospital in Sabon Wuse, where the injured continue to receive care and the bodies of the deceased have been deposited at the hospital mortuary.

The FRSC identified illegal mixed loading—the practice of transporting people in vehicles designed for goods conveyance—as a significant factor that worsened the severity of the crash. In this incident, passengers were being transported in a tanker truck not designed or authorized for human conveyance, a violation of road safety regulations that the agency has repeatedly warned against.

FRSC Corps Marshal Shehu Mohammed condemned the reckless violation of safety laws, describing the crash as entirely avoidable and a stark reminder of the devastating consequences of traffic offenses such as speeding and improper loading. He emphasized that no journey is worth the loss of human life.

The FRSC also warned that habitual disregard for safety advisories by motorists and transport operators continues to claim lives on roads across Nigeria. The agency stressed the importance of adherence to national road traffic regulations, including observing speed limits, using vehicles appropriately, and strictly prohibiting mixed loading. The corps marshal added that the FRSC will intensify enforcement efforts and expand public awareness campaigns to curb dangerous practices.

The accident has reignited national concern over road safety challenges, particularly in rural and inter-local government corridors. Excessive speed, poorly maintained vehicles, and illegal conveyance of passengers remain recurrent issues contributing to Nigeria’s high rate of traffic accidents, with Niger State historically recording some of the highest road crash fatalities.

Eyewitnesses described the scene as chaotic, with survivors trying to help one another amid twisted metal and debris. Many injured persons were reported to be in critical condition, with families anxiously awaiting updates at hospitals.

Government officials and community leaders in Niger State expressed deep sorrow over the loss of life and extended condolences to the families of the deceased. State emergency response units are coordinating with the FRSC to monitor the condition of the injured, facilitate medical care, and support victims’ families through the aftermath of the tragedy.

The crash highlights the urgent need for improved enforcement of road safety laws and a comprehensive strategy to eliminate dangerous behaviors such as illegal transportation practices. Safety organizations and advocacy groups have renewed calls for better infrastructure, enhanced driver education, stricter penalties for traffic violations, and increased public awareness to reduce the frequency of such deadly incidents on Nigerian highways.

As investigations continue, the FRSC has urged all road users to remain vigilant and report unsafe vehicles or dangerous driving behaviors to appropriate authorities immediately. The agency emphasized that road safety is a shared responsibility requiring cooperation among motorists, transport operators, enforcement agencies, and the traveling public to save lives and prevent future tragedies.
