Two hunters were killed on Tuesday when gunmen ambushed a funeral convoy in Ifelodun Local Government Area of Kwara State. The convoy was transporting the remains of three deceased hunters from Oro-Ago to Oke-Oyan for burial when the attack occurred just a few kilometres from its destination, highlighting ongoing security challenges in rural communities of the state.
Local sources reported that the victims were part of an entourage responsible for escorting the bodies of their colleagues to their home community. As the convoy neared Oke-Oyan, armed assailants opened fire, killing two hunters instantly and creating panic among mourners and security personnel present.
Community leaders and eyewitnesses confirmed that the rapid response of local security personnel, including forest guards, police officers, and other hunters who were part of the convoy, helped contain the attackers and prevented further casualties. The bodies of the slain hunters were taken to a mortuary in Oro-Ago, pending burial arrangements.
Despite the fatalities, the remainder of the convoy continued under heightened security protection to Oke-Oyan, allowing funeral rites for the three deceased hunters originally being transported to proceed. The attack has raised concerns about the rising threat of violence in rural areas of southern Kwara, where isolated communities have become increasingly vulnerable to armed attacks.
