Operatives of the Lagos State Police Command have arrested three suspects believed to be key members of a criminal syndicate responsible for a series of car parts thefts and vehicle vandalism across residential estates in Lagos. The arrests were announced during a press briefing on Wednesday following months of intelligence-led investigations.

The Lagos police disclosed that the syndicate operated with sophistication, often targeting vehicles in gated communities, particularly in the Lekki area. Members of the group reportedly disguised themselves as security personnel, complete with fake uniforms and identification cards, to gain access to estates and bypass normal security measures.

Authorities identified the three suspects as Obinna Okeke, Emmanuel Anyanwu, and Jude Onouha, with Onouha described as the alleged leader. Investigators said the group used the disguise to approach estates confidently, sometimes carrying a modified Mercedes car jack made to resemble a firearm, enhancing the appearance of authority and intimidating residents.

The syndicate reportedly specialised in stealing high-value vehicle components such as tyres, batteries, wiring systems, brainboxes, side mirrors, and other premium accessories. Stolen items were allegedly taken to secondary markets and spare parts hubs across Lagos, where they were sold for profit.

Police explained that the gang had temporarily slowed operations late last year but resumed activity earlier this year, prompting intensified surveillance and the eventual arrests. Officials stressed that these three arrests are part of a broader operation to dismantle the entire network, with investigations ongoing to identify additional members and trace the distribution of stolen parts.

Authorities appealed to residents and estate management teams to verify the credentials of anyone claiming to be security operatives and to report suspicious activities promptly. Community cooperation with law enforcement, they emphasized, is critical in preventing further incidents.

Recovered items linked to the syndicate’s operations have been displayed by police, with forensic teams working to match them to reported thefts to facilitate restitution. The suspects are expected to be charged with theft, criminal conspiracy, impersonation, and possession of stolen property once investigations are complete.

Residents and estate security associations have welcomed the arrests, noting that the spate of thefts had created fear and financial loss. Security experts highlighted that criminals increasingly exploit gaps in estate security, making continuous collaboration between private security and law enforcement essential.

This operation forms part of ongoing efforts by the Lagos State Police Command to combat vehicle-related crimes and other criminal networks operating in the metropolis, with authorities emphasizing intelligence sharing and community policing as vital strategies for improving security.
