Unknown gunmen carried out a violent attack on Oro‑Ago community in Ifelodun Local Government Area of Kwara State on Wednesday evening, killing a local vigilante and injuring his younger brother. The assailants stormed the community and opened fire, leaving residents in panic and fear.

The deceased, popularly known as Baba Ibeji, was a well‑known figure among local vigilante operatives. His younger brother, referred to as Ajere, sustained bullet wounds during the assault and was rushed to a medical facility for treatment. Security sources indicated that the gunmen fled the scene immediately after the attack, and their identities remain unknown.

Eyewitnesses said the assailants fired indiscriminately, creating chaos as families sought cover from the gunfire. The attack highlighted the vulnerability of rural communities in Kwara State, particularly areas where armed criminal groups operate with increasing boldness. Residents said Baba Ibeji had been among the first line of defence in prior security incidents, warning neighbours and confronting criminal elements, making his death a significant blow to local security efforts.

Local leaders and residents have appealed to the Kwara State Government and federal security agencies to deploy additional patrols, engage in intelligence‑driven operations, and strengthen security collaboration with community vigilante groups. Traditional rulers and youth associations emphasised the urgent need for coordinated action to prevent further attacks and protect lives and property.

The incident reflects a broader pattern of insecurity affecting Ifelodun Local Government Area and other parts of central Nigeria. Recent months have seen multiple reports of armed attacks, kidnappings, and robberies in rural settlements, with assailants exploiting forested and remote terrain to evade capture. Residents have voiced growing frustration over repeated security breaches and the limited capacity of formal security forces to respond swiftly to sudden attacks.

Authorities have launched investigations into the Oro‑Ago attack, gathering witness statements and pursuing leads to identify and apprehend the perpetrators. Meanwhile, families of the victims and community members continue to call for justice and stronger measures to ensure the safety of local residents.

The death of Baba Ibeji and the injury of his brother underscore the risks faced by vigilante groups and the pressing need for sustainable security solutions in Kwara State’s rural communities. Residents remain on edge, with heightened concern for their safety and calls for immediate and sustained intervention by law enforcement agencies.
