Residents of the Special Site community in Pankshin Local Government Area of Plateau State were left shocked and grieving on Thursday following the discovery of the bodies of aborted twin infants in a refuse dump near homes in the area. The incident has provoked a strong emotional response among community members and renewed attention toward reproductive health challenges and social vulnerabilities in the region.

Eyewitnesses reported that the twin infants, one male and one female, were found inside a discarded plastic bag at a waste disposal site behind a residential compound. A local farmer, walking near the dump, noticed a dog persistently sniffing the bag and, upon closer inspection, discovered the remains. He immediately raised the alarm, prompting residents to gather at the site.

Enman Danladi, a commercial driver whose home is close to the refuse area, was among the first residents informed of the discovery. He described the farmer as visibly distressed and said he quickly gathered neighbors to respond to the situation. The community decided to dig a small grave near the site to provide a respectful burial for the infants. Many residents, particularly women, were visibly emotional, with some weeping openly.

Danladi emphasized that no one within the immediate community was suspected of involvement. Residents expressed anger and sorrow, suggesting that such acts are often carried out by outsiders, making accountability difficult. The incident sparked widespread outrage, with community members calling for swift investigation and stronger protection measures for vulnerable women and children.

Local authorities, including the Pankshin Local Government Council and the state health ministry, were reportedly informed and have been urged to investigate the matter. The Plateau State Police and other relevant agencies are expected to conduct a formal inquiry, including documenting the scene and interviewing residents to gather information that could identify those responsible.

The discovery has also reignited discussions on unsafe abortion practices, limited access to reproductive health services, and social stigma around pregnancy outside of marriage. Advocates note that women facing unplanned pregnancies often experience social and economic pressures that can lead to desperate measures, highlighting the need for accessible healthcare, counseling, and community support programs.

Civil society organizations and women’s rights groups have called for comprehensive education, family planning, and crisis intervention programs to prevent similar occurrences in the future. Experts stress that effective strategies must include both public health measures and legal enforcement to ensure the protection of infants while providing safe support channels for expectant mothers.

As the community continues to mourn, leaders have pledged to work with health and law enforcement authorities to strengthen awareness campaigns and support services. The incident underscores the critical need for compassionate, multi-sector approaches to reproductive health, maternal care, and child protection in Plateau State and beyond.
