In a major breakthrough against organised armed robbery in the southwest, the Oyo State Police Command has dismantled a suspected criminal syndicate accused of violently hijacking shipping containers and diverting their contents for resale. The intelligence-led operation culminated in the arrest of ten suspects at a hideout near the Genesis Hotel in the Challenge area of Ibadan, the state capital, where officers recovered goods valued at approximately ₦100 million. This development comes after weeks of discreet surveillance and collaboration with the community, underscoring the concerted effort by security authorities to curb logistics-related crime and protect trade networks that are vital to commerce and livelihoods.

According to police statements, the gang allegedly specialised in intercepting fully-loaded containers while in transit, often confronting drivers and escorts at gunpoint before transferring cargo to secondary vehicles. The recovered items reflect the breadth of merchandise targeted by the suspects and include 40 air conditioners, 10 washing machines, an electric motorcycle, trailer spare parts, LED lights, assorted furniture materials, hair wigs, creams, and other household and industrial goods. The inventory of seized property points to a highly organised criminal enterprise with the capacity to disrupt supply chains across state borders.

The arrested suspects are identified as Mukaila Omorayo (48), Adekanbi Adesola (39), Ahmed Oderinlo (38), Samuel Omoseyin (53), Ramon Saheed (52), Monilola Ajayi (58), Akanbi Bisi (51), Wasilat Abdullahi (48), Bolaji Tanimola (51), and Adeola Oyesina (51). Police confirmed that the suspected gang members have already admitted to their involvement and are cooperating with investigators to identify additional accomplices who remain at large.

The operation was led by specialised police units acting on credible information from members of the public, who provided tips that helped officers trace the criminal group’s hideout. The Commissioner of Police in Oyo State, Abimbola Ayodeji Olugbenga, expressed commendation for the professionalism, discipline, and resilience shown by the operatives throughout the multi-week surveillance and tactical deployment. He highlighted the importance of public cooperation in intelligence gathering, urging Nigerians to continue partnering with law enforcement to secure communities and economic corridors.

Police also appealed to local residents and hospitality sector stakeholders, including hotel owners and operators, to remain alert to suspicious activity. Authorities noted that criminal groups often exploit accommodations and transient facilities near major transit routes as logistics or storage hubs for stolen goods. Management of the hotel linked to this case has been summoned to assist investigators, as part of efforts to ascertain whether the facility was knowingly used in the commission of crimes or as a base of operation for the syndicate.

Following the arrests, the police emphasized that the suspects would be charged to court after the completion of formal investigations, and further action will be taken to prosecute them under relevant sections of the criminal code relating to armed robbery, conspiracy, and theft. As part of the ongoing inquiries, authorities are tracking leads to locate stolen goods already moved from the area and to expose other members of the alleged criminal network.

The crackdown has been welcomed by residents, transport unions, and business owners who have long raised concerns about the rise of container hijacking and logistics theft, which have contributed to rising costs, supply delays, and heightened insecurity along major routes. Analysts say that such syndicates exploit gaps in surveillance along highways and rely on both violence and covert coordination to evade detection, making community reporting and strategic police deployment critical in rolling them back.

Security observers note that Nigeria’s trade infrastructure has been vulnerable to armed robbery and theft along primary road corridors, a situation that has broader economic implications, especially for small businesses and import-dependent industries. The Oyo State Police Command’s success in this operation is seen as part of a wider national push by the Nigeria Police Force to clamp down on violent crime, protect supply chains, and restore public confidence in lawful commerce.

As the investigation advances, the police have pledged to provide periodic updates, and emphasised the importance of sustained intelligence-sharing by residents and logistics workers. For now, the arrests mark a notable achievement in disrupting an organised criminal network that had operated across multiple jurisdictions.
