The Nigerian Bar Association (NBA) has issued a strong condemnation of the recent attacks on residents in Jos, Plateau State, which occurred on Palm Sunday, March 29, 2026. The association described the violence as senseless, brutal, and deeply distressing, highlighting the indiscriminate targeting of innocent citizens as they returned from worship services and went about their daily activities.

In a statement signed by NBA President Mazi Afam Osigwe, SAN, the association emphasized that the timing of the attacks — on a sacred day marking the start of Holy Week — made the tragedy particularly heartbreaking. Families who had expected a day of prayer and reflection were instead confronted with fear, loss, and grief. The NBA underscored that the repeated nature of such attacks contributes to a climate of impunity, eroding public confidence in the government’s ability to protect lives and property.

The NBA called on security agencies to swiftly investigate the killings, apprehend the perpetrators, and ensure they are brought to justice. It urged both federal and state authorities to strengthen security presence in Plateau State and other vulnerable areas, enhance intelligence gathering, and adopt proactive measures to prevent further attacks. The association also stressed the need for transparency and accountability in the government’s response, ensuring victims and affected families receive justice and support.

Beyond immediate security measures, the NBA highlighted the broader constitutional and governance implications of the attacks. The repeated failure to protect citizens threatens the right to life guaranteed under the Constitution of the Federal Republic of Nigeria, 1999 (as amended). The association emphasized that every Nigerian, regardless of ethnicity, religion, or location, has an inviolable right to life and security, and the government has an unequivocal responsibility to uphold these rights.

Expressing condolences to the victims’ families and the people of Plateau State, the NBA reaffirmed its solidarity with those affected. It called for collective action to ensure that such violence does not become normalized, warning that continued attacks on civilians endanger national cohesion, weaken the rule of law, and perpetuate cycles of fear and insecurity.

The NBA’s statement reflects the legal community’s insistence on urgent and decisive action to safeguard human life, enforce the rule of law, and prevent further tragedies in Plateau State and other conflict-prone regions of Nigeria.
